When it comes to Halloween, there are a few traditions we just can't live without. Some celebrate by trick-or-treating or carving the perfect jack-o'-lantern, but nothing quite beats our favorite tradition of curling up on the couch to watch your favorite spooky movie. And while everyone has their own go-to films that get them in the Halloween spirit, a few stand out from the rest.

In a recent survey, the movie rental gurus at Redbox set out to discover which movies Americans plan to watch on repeat throughout October. They asked about 1,000 customers to list their favorite Halloween movies, then ranked the movies based on the results. And we have to admit, the top picks definitely have us re-thinking our weekend plans. Who says Halloween movie season can't start right now?

Top 5 Family Halloween Movies

Survey respondents said their favorite family-friendly Halloween movie is Hocus Pocus, a film that follows three teens who must stop a coven of evil witches by stealing their book of spells. Since the movie debuted in 1993, it's become a Halloween classic, airing annually as part of Freeform's Halloween programming (which starts this week!) and even inspiring even a line of Hocus Pocus-themed Halloween décor.

Top 5 Scary Halloween Movies

In addition to family-friendly flicks, Redbox users also voted for their favorite scary movies—and it's no surprise that The Shining came out on top. Based on the bestselling book by Stephen King, the 1980 horror film has psychological twists and turns that are just as haunting no matter how many times you've seen it. The movie was even added to the National Film Registry for preservation by the Library of Congress in 2018—an honor reserved for films that have significant cultural importance.
