Peruvian Handmade Wise King Retablo Sculpture

That great skill and attention to detail are necessary to hand craft an Ayacuchean retablo or diorama is especially evident in this matchbox-sized example from Alberto Ayala. The box in which the tiny figures are housed is fashioned from cardboard and then hand decorated with flower and leaf motifs. Inside is one of the three wise kings and at his feet are three villagers dressed in typical Peruvian attire. The tiny figures are made from plaster and painstakingly hand painted. As is customary with retablos there are two doors which can be closed to protect the box's contents.
