I am Alka Jain. I was born in the year 1973 in the capital city of India Delhi, famous for its rich heritage and culture. During my childhood days, I used to see many jewel smiths, wooden workers, brass artisans, printers doing their work, who lived near my home. The wood used in North is mostly sheesham, teak for furniture where as in South it is mostly rosewood. I got married in a family who lived in Delhi and my father in law was in handicraft manufacturing and exports. Although working on it is bit hard but that ensures the durability of the piece eleven made from it. Teak wood is another option but that is more expensive I stick to Sheesham only and my workers are also comfortable on it. For inlay work we are using plastic. In earlier times the inlay was done by using Ivory. The final finish of ebony wood product is great but now the availability of this wood is limited to small pieces only. Some times we use black ebony inlay to compliment the white plastic on our products. My team of workers are well experienced and understands my requirements. My main emphasis is on quality. My team of workers know that I do not compromise on quality. They are happy doing quality work for me. I try to take care of their needs. I fund them for any local festival, education of their children or marriages. I wish to spread my work all over the world, so that people can appreciate it. I glad that through NOVICA, I would be able to fulfill my dreams. I was born in 1973 in Delhi, which is famous for its rich heritage and culture. As a child, I'd see artisans like jewelers, woodcarvers, brass metalworkers and printers, who lived near my home. My father sold incense and worked from home. I began to visit exhibitions where I could talk with craftspeople from all over India It was enjoyable to compare different art forms Southern designs are mainly inspired by temples and the inlay features natural colored woods whereas designs from Northern India feature inlays in one color North Indian art uses mostly sheesham and teak for furniture and South India mostly uses rosewood. I use sheesham wood in my designs because it's a durable hardwood, although it's a bit difficult, it's the durability, I used the teak every now and then, for the inlay, we use plastic. used but, because it was very expensive and was later banned in India, we shifted to camel bone, but bone turned yellow after a few months, so we finally decided to use plastic. The most challenging wood to carve is ebony, which is the hardest wood I know. When finished, our ebony furniture looks great, but we use only for small pieces or for inlay. I work with a team of very experienced artisans and we do not compromise on quality, we hope you like our designs.
