Batik cotton wall art, 'Day Before Tuesday' (Ghana)

Ghanaian artisan Samuel Ashong creates a stunning batik painting on cotton. Samuel draws his unique design on the fabric, before applying wax to the areas that should remain untouched. He then adds colored dye to the rest of the image, resulting in a beautiful canvas of color. This batik art shows a crowd of fishermen and fishmongers gathered at the shore to trade. The morning sun casts its radiance over the palm trees and canoes below. The day before Tuesday is typically very busy for these people, as over the decades they have accepted Tuesday as a day of rest, and it is believed this enables the sea to increase its fish stock. The artwork is signed by the artisan.
