materials

  • Branch

  • Black card stock (Pictured: Card stock, by Colorbok, in Black, $13 for 30 sheets, staples.com.)

  • Scissors

  • Black seam binding

  • Flat thumbtacks

  • Thread

steps

  1. Download and print the bat template, enlarging or reducing to create a variety of sizes if desired; cut out with scissors.

  2. Trace template onto black card stock; cut them out and fold them. To make 1 whole bat, fold sheet of heavyweight black paper or card stock in half widthwise. Then place template's straight edge along fold, and trace outline. Cut out along traced line, and unfold. Then fold bat’s wings where template's dotted lines indicate. Repeat for each bat.

  3. Make a small hole in the center of each bat with a tack. Poke a piece of thread through each hole, and knot it. Tie the bats to a found branch (painting it black is optional). Then hang the branch from two pieces of thread secured to the top of the window with flat thumbtacks.
