Pom-Pom Berry Wreath

A striking wreath draws guests to the buffet. Start with a store-bought willow branch, and glue on hand-dyed pom-poms for berries. Our wreath contrasts with the opulent peacock-blue and gold of velvet-covered trivets. (To make the trivets, stretch velvet over wooden slabs of assorted sizes. You can easily re-cover the slabs to suit a new color scheme.)
Try assorted sizes of pom-poms and two or three concentrated dyes for natural-looking color variations.
Pour 4 cups very hot water into a small plastic tub, then add 4 teaspoons Rit dye (different combinations of Tangerine, Scarlet, Taupe and Wine look great). Submerge pom-poms in dye bath for at least 5 minutes, leaving some in the dye longer for more saturated color.
Remove pom-poms with a slotted spoon, and let dry on a baking sheet lined with paper towels; leave undisturbed until completely dry, about two days.
Use a paintbrush to dab a fast-drying clear glue such as Magna-Tac on branches and wreaths to adhere the pom-poms.
