The basic house is complete with a roof, windows, a chimney. By adding more support sticks, kids can make houses into snack shops -- every stick village needs one. With a city of sticks, kids and their toy animals will never be bored.

What You'll Need

Materials

  • Popsicle sticks (craft sticks)
  • Wood glue
  • Toothpicks
  • Beads
  • Paper
  • Ribbon

Instructions

  1. Lay sticks side by side; leave gaps or use half-sticks to make space for windows and doors. On two opposing walls (shown top and bottom), join sticks by gluing support sticks across ends; these provide a surface for gluing to adjacent walls. Glue center supports on remaining walls and where you will have windows.

  2. Glue together half-sticks and whole sticks; use toothpicks for panes.

  3. Lay out half-sticks; glue on a diagonal support stick and bead doorknob. Glue stacked half-sticks together to make doorstep.

  4. Glue one cut-off stick perpendicular to another (add clay inside; flowers are beads and paper leaves on cut-off toothpicks). Glue windows and window box to walls. For hinge, glue ribbon to door and door frame. Glue walls together.

  5. For sides, lay out two rows of sticks, each as wide as the house; glue on center supports. Glue together two A-frames. For chimney, cut two wide craft sticks into shapes as shown; glue together at sides. Glue edge of one roof side to the flat side of one A-frame; glue other roof side to same frame. Glue on second A-frame. Glue on chimney. Set roof on house.

  6. For extra-long roofs and walls, such as the ones pictured on the ice-pop stand, just add more support sticks.

  7. Lay out a row of sticks. Across top and bottom edges, glue single rows of supports; they will not quite meet in the middle. To each row, add another support stick to connect the sticks at the middle.

  8. Lay together smaller walls that have support sticks on sides; glue on half-sticks at center to join them together.
