3 Healthier Ice Cream Alternatives

Everyday Food, June 2012

A strategic ice cream swap can whittle your waist and help your heart. Here are three ways to control calories and cut fat without sacrificing the summer indulgence.

Good: Gelato

Both ice cream and gelato contain milk and cream, but gelato is made with more milk. This ideal dairy ratio means it has slightly less fat than ice cream but still has a rich, creamy texture.

Better: Frozen Yogurt

Fro-yo can have about half the fat of its creamier cousin. Look for a "Live and Active Cultures" seal, which guarantees it contains the healthy probiotics that make yogurt an asset.

Best: Sorbet

By far the healthiest alternative, a fruity sorbet is naturally fat-free, and the calorie count can be half that of ice cream. Look for a brand with fewer than 28 grams of sugar per serving.
