Spectral Pumpkin Silhouettes

A ghostly pair pose in profile -- immortal souls captured in pumpkin flesh for eternity (or at least as long as the squash stays fresh). These pumpkins are carefully carved so that their curved stems stand in opposing arabesques.

  1. Photograph your subject in profile, then color in face, hair, and neck with permanent marker (alternatively, borrow a profile from a clip-art book). Photocopy darkened profile, enlarging to fit your pumpkin; if necessary, smooth lines around back of head with correction fluid. With wax pencil, draw an oval around silhouette to create a cameo. Tape photocopied profile to prepared pumpkin.

  2. Outline profile and oval with awl or T-pin. Remove photocopy.

  3. Using lino cutter in narrow places, and wood gouge in open areas, scoop out pumpkin flesh surrounding profile until you have a silhouette. Wrap string lights around jar, then place inside pumpkin
