Smart ovens are a quantum leap from the typical toaster oven. They heat up quickly, have greater functionality, are more efficient, and are simply more enjoyable to use than their analog counterparts. On the negative side, they can be a pain to clean. High-end models can come with a steep learning curve and price tag to match, but they also tend to include a money back guarantee if returned within a few months.

While some smart ovens are basically turbo-charged toaster ovens, others use completely different technology to cook. Innovative models use halogen lamps or steam and convection (air frying) and include connected thermometers, scanners, or cameras, so the oven can identify your food and you can monitor cooking remotely. Many of them connect via WiFi to phones and other devices, which means you can program cooking phases even from afar. Prices vary greatly, but these are workhorse appliances that can get more use than a conventional oven in many households.

Best Air Fryer Toaster Oven: Cuisinart Digital AirFryer Toaster Oven

If you've been wanting an air fryer but don't have room for another appliance, this one fits the bill perfectly. Unlike other models, it's got a convection fan on the ceiling, and the non-stick interior makes it easier to clean. The biggest downside is that the controls are not terribly intuitive, and it doesn't connect to the internet.

Best Bargain: Tovala

This oven scans QR codes from hundreds of brands, and you can order surprisingly good meals that cook as if by magic. If you're cooking from scratch, you'll love the steam feature which keeps food moist and perks up baked goods. It's an incredible value for an internet connected oven. While the size makes it ideal for individuals or couples it's all but impossible to cook a full meal for a family or larger household all at once and it doesn't have air frying functionality.

Best Splurge: Brava Chef's Choice

Often described as the Tesla of ovens, the Brava is sleek, stylish, and incredibly fast thanks to halogen cooking lamps that heat up in seconds rather than minutes. Cooking with light takes some practice but a welcoming online community and frequent updates to the app make it easier and can yield impressive results. The biggest advantage may be the ability to cook combinations of very different ingredients on one tray, at the same time, such as meats and vegetables. The biggest disadvantages are the high sticker price and the need for custom bakeware, along with the relatively small interior capacity.

Best All Around: June Oven Premium

If an oven could ever be described as fun, it's surely this one. The large, full color touch screen is easy to use, and the camera not only lets you monitor how things are cooking but recognizes food. Having the oven guess what you've just put inside and learn your preferences never gets old, and the programs mean cooking requires a lot less searching for recipes. With plenty of settings and functions, the only thing this oven doesn't do is offer a steam function and if you purchase a lower end package you can add on accessories, but they are pricey.

Best for Bakers and Sous Vide: Anova Precision Oven

The combination of steam and convection allows you to make true restaurant quality food much quicker, easier, and in a more environmentally friendly way than by using traditional sous vide with plastic bags, a circulator, and a water bath. The steam feature is also the secret to incredible baked goods. It's not the easiest appliance to learn how to use, and it doesn't have a camera, but there are frequent updates and plenty of support if you have questions or need troubleshooting.

Best Compact: Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer

Breville is a fan favorite for toaster ovens, and while the BOV 860 model doesn't connect to the internet, it does include air frying functionality. It also has presets for toast, bagel, bake, roast, broil, pizza, cookies, reheat, warm, and slow cook. A big advantage to this model is its compact size, great for kitchens with small counters and not much clearance space, and it comes with a generous set of accessories including a non-stick pizza pan. Beside not connecting to the web, the only other downside is the lack of low heat options such as dehydrate and proof.
