Our Favorite Rainbow Crafts to Make in Honor of Pride Month

Pride Month, which is celebrated in June each year, is an opportunity to honor the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual community and commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which took place on June 28, 1969, in New York City. As a symbol of pride, you will often see a rainbow flag at events and celebrations held during the month, and this too has additional meaning. Gilbert Baker, an artist, designer, Vietnam War veteran, and drag performer, first designed the flag's colors in 1978 to symbolize togetherness, as people of all races, genders, and ages make up the LGBTQ+ community, and everyone is natural and beautiful just like a rainbow. The original flag included eight colors: Pink represented sex, red stood for life, orange meant healing, yellow embodied sunlight, green symbolized nature, turquoise signified art, indigo conveyed harmony, and violet highlighted spirit.

To make your own rainbow creation in honor of Pride Month, we have gathered an array of colorful DIY projects you can put together with your loved ones, starting with a memorable backdrop for your events. With a balloon arch or a full-on balloon wall, you can have perfect rainbow décor that can double as an area for a photo op.

You can also make summer-centric rainbow crafts, which are fun and meaningful ways to spend time with family and friends this June. Take rainbow seashells, for example. This project is made complete with red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple food coloring mixed with vinegar to make each vibrant shell. If you would like another idea on deck for any festivities you have planned, consider crafting a floral display in a range of colors. We recommend filling a vase with anemones, poppies, sweet peas, thistle, snap dragons, ranunculus, roses, olive, delphinium, and baby blue eucalyptus to symbolize the rainbow in the arrangement.

Looking for other projects to work on in honor of Pride Month? Stay tuned. Here, we're sharing our favorite rainbow-themed crafts that you can make to symbolize togetherness and solidarity during Pride Month and year-round.

We love elegant and vibrant floral arrangements for any occasion, but they're especially well-suited to Pride Month festivities. Consider displaying your favorite florals in monochromatic hues, crafting six distinct arrangements to represent each color of the rainbow. Another option is to combine all blooms in a rainbow shade together, like the centerpiece pictured here. This flower-filled vase features anemones, poppies, sweet peas, thistle, snap dragons, ranunculus, roses, olive, delphinium, and baby blue eucalyptus.

Candle Jars

A rainbow candle display will illuminate any intimate get-together with friends and family in honor of Pride Month. Our best practice, depending on the make of your candleholder, is to spray paint the vessels into the red, orange, yellow, blue, green, and purple hues. Start by standing wooden candlesticks on newsprint outside. Spray-paint all around, and then let them dry for about 10 to 15 minutes. Then flip them upside down and spray-paint again and let them dry overnight.

Crocheting a colorful blanket will be the perfect keepsake to pass on to loved ones. While making a rainbow blanket can seem like an intricate process, crocheting essentially includes these steps: tying a slip knot, making a chain stitch, making a single crochet, turning chain, creating a foundation ring, double crocheting, joining new yarn, and finishing by threading a large needle with a big piece of yarn. With some practice, you will be able to create this rainbow piece in no time.
