Holiday Planning & Ideas Easter Gingham Décor Ideas for a Fun, Picnic-Inspired Easter Tablescape By Caroline Biggs Caroline Biggs Caroline is a freelance writer for MarthaStewart.com. Editorial Guidelines Published on March 9, 2021 Share Tweet Pin Email Trending Videos 'Tis the season for setting festive, Easter-friendly tablescapes, and there's no pattern that evokes the spirit of spring like gingham. "Gingham is a classic check that, for me, is a sign of spring and freshness," says interior designer Mitchell Hill. "For Easter, we would wear gingham-smocked outfits, but as an adult, I see it as a nostalgic reference that can liven up any garden party with a classic twist." Interior designer Marika Meyer of Marika Meyer Textiles agrees, noting that gingham is the ultimate chameleon pattern. "This versatile check works in any scale and easily pairs with any pattern," she explains. "In its smallest scale, it can read like a woven, adding a subtle layer of interest, like another texture. And in a large scale, it's bold and graphic—the color choice can make it feel sweet or sophisticated." Traditionally associated with picnic-friendly checked tablecloths and linens, gingham, says Leigh Jones of The Very Thing, Ltd, can serve as a neutral building block for other elements of your tablescape. "The pattern is open to interpretation with different sizes and colors," she explains. "For a more elevated look, consider a gingham with a larger print as a starting point for your spring tablescape," noting to add fresh florals and colorful plates and serveware into the mix for more visual intrigue. Better yet, let the picnic-inspired print physically lead you into the great outdoors—a safer place, should you be hosting a small group come Easter.
