An Austin, Texas, Wedding with Food, Music, and Family at the Forefront
After taking a breather from wedding planning to welcome their daughter, a pair of Boston-based live-music fans headed southwest to celebrate. Their rollicking fête in Texas's most melodious city put the things they love most—music, food, and family—into wonderful harmony.
A match on the dating app Hinge led to their first date, but it was a bluesy guitar riff that struck a chord between Ben Robbins and Breighl Mobley. "When we met in Boston in 2015, I had just come back from a trip to Bali, and was six months away from moving to the West Coast," says Breighl, the founder and CEO of Ebi, a postpartum-care company. "I wasn't expecting much. We went to this great Mediterranean restaurant, and Ben was late, so I was kind of over it before it began. But then he recognized the Deer Tick song that was playing. That's when we connected."
Breighl did move. However, she didn't stay away for long. After a year of cross-country dating, she returned to Boston and the pair went back to that restaurant for dinner, where Ben proposed with a diamond hidden among the small plates. Four months later, they learned they were expecting their first child, Phyllis, now 3. They planned to wed in a civil ceremony before she arrived and save up for a big party later on, but when Breighl went into labor early due to pre-eclampsia, they had the hospital chaplain officiate a quickie ceremony on the spot. "It was very Young and the Restless," she says. "My mother-in-law got our wedding bands from a local boutique, and our doula brought cupcakes."
Two years later, the young family was ready for that big wedding, and the Live Music Capital of the World—home of Breighl's undergrad alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin—was the ideal location. They chose The Contemporary Austin–Laguna Gloria, an art museum with beautiful grounds overlooking Lake Austin, as the venue. It appeared even more verdant after drenching showers the day their 180 guests arrived. "The hotel where we had our welcome party flooded, to the point where they were sweeping water out of the lobby," says Ben, a psychiatrist.
Luckily, May 4, 2019, dawned bright and sunny for all the live sets on their program, including Grammy-nominated bluegrass band Wood & Wire during the ceremony (they played a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" as the processional), and local singer-songwriter Molly Burch at the reception. Their first dance, to Burch's version of Sam Cooke's "Nothing Can Change This Love," summed up their story beautifully. "I own just one record on vinyl, and it's Sam Cooke," says Ben. Adds Breighl, "My mom listened to him a lot when I was little. His music is kind of like the soundtrack of my life."
Breighl wore a flocked georgette party dress by her favorite designer, Ulla Johnson.
Under the Arch
Their ceremony marker had toffee and white garden roses to mirror her tonal bouquet.
Smashing the Glass
To honor Ben's Jewish heritage, his family rabbi spoke at the ceremony, and the pair called their daughter up to stomp the traditional glass together.
For Ben, a taco fiend, passed mini appetizers were a must. Also on the hors d'oeuvres menu: house-made chips with pimiento-cheese, lentil, and vegetable dips.
Ben chose the showstopping Botanical No. 9 balloon installation, a paean to the day's poppy pink palette; it was a surprise to everyone at the reception (even Breighl).
"We had a vision of one long dinner table," says Breighl. "The lush, natural setting lent itself to the simple, minimalist feel we were going for."
The vanilla- and-pistachio cake was filled with macerated berries and Chantilly cream, and topped with garden roses like those in Breighl's bouquet.
