The new year of 2021 is fast approaching and with it will come a whole new slew of artisanal trends. "Each year, we see new and emerging trends on Etsy, based on a combination of what sellers are making, what shoppers are looking for, and what's happening in the larger retail industry," Dayna Isom Johnson, Trend Expert at Etsy, explains. "And because our sellers are some of the most creative people, oftentimes trends are born right on Etsy."

And since 2020 was a year like no other, Johnson believes that next year's trends will be a reflection of what is happening in the world as a whole. "The COVID-19 pandemic greatly influenced this year's trends, as shoppers spent more time at home than ever before and gravitated towards items that reflected their overall lifestyle shift," she says. "I'm predicting that 2021 will be all about creating connections—to each other, to ourselves, to nature, and to small businesses around the world. From our color of the year to new everyday trends, I'm confident that shoppers will be finding ways to create connections, big and small, more than ever."

Curious what trends will be all the rage on Etsy in 2021? From sky blue color palettes to space-inspired decor and more, we asked Johnson to share her predictions.

Sky Blue Everything

Etsy recently declared sky blue their "Etsy's Color of the Year," and with good reason. "After such a tumultuous past year, shoppers are looking forward to bluer skies ahead," Johnson explains. "Etsy's color of the year perfectly represents our renewed sense of hope, while offering tranquility and further connecting us to nature." As a result, she says you can expect to see all sorts of beautiful, artisanal sky blue-colored clothing items and housewares popping up on Etsy (and beyond) in 2021.

Multifunctional Design

As we continue to hunker down at home in 2021, Johnson says that finding well-designed furniture and decor items that help maximize our spaces will be more important than ever. "While many of our rooms served multiple purposes in 2020, shoppers will now be opting for decor that helps restore balance in their spaces, like fold-away desks, murphy beds ($1899, etsy.com), or room dividers," she explains. "I also predict that shoppers will be finding creative ways to use their outdoor spaces, like creating patio living rooms or balcony home offices."

Friluftsliv-Friendly Décor

Move over Hygge, Johnsons says there's a new Scandinavian lifestyle trend in town. "Hygge has taken hold for the last few years, but next year, shoppers will be embracing 'friluftsliv', the Norweigan concept of getting outdoors and connecting to nature," she explains. To usher some friluftsliv-inspired vibes into your home, consider a pine-scented soy candle ($26, etsy.com) or live edge side table ($69, etsy.com), to evoke the spirit of the great outdoors.

Outer Space Motifs

2020 was a tough year for everyone, and Johnson says parents are getting creative about searching for clothing, school supplies, and home décor that mentally transports their kids to another galaxy. "We've seen a huge increase in searches for space-themed kids or baby items ($35, etsy.com), as well as space-themed wallpaper," she says. "Kids have been through a lot this year—from virtual classrooms to limited playdates—and the outer space trend not only allows them to escape reality and expand their imaginations, but also to learn about our solar system."

Sophisticated Pet Accessories

Johnson predicts that shopping for design-savvy pet products, including personalized food bowls ($17.03, etsy.com), sophisticated sleeping nooks, and even coordinating clothing sets for owners and pets ($165, etsy.com), will be a major priority for pet parents in 2021. "Many people welcomed new pets in 2020 and now that their furry friends are a little older and wiser, shoppers are looking to invest in statement pieces to make their four-legged family members truly feel at home," she explains.
