These Are the Top Five Kitchen Trends, According to Instagram

Shaker cabinets, wood floors, and houseplants topped the list.

Many people are taking advantage of the extra time spent at home during the pandemic to do some remodeling. Whether it's replacing older furniture or completely renovating a well-loved room in the home, now is a fabulous time to update your home. Thinking about refreshing your kitchen? Dulux is reporting the top five most-liked kitchen features on Instagram. The architectural paint company analyzed the most-used kitchen decoration hashtags on Instagram (#KitchensOfInstagram, #Kitchensofinsta, #KitchensofIG) to find the "most-liked" images. From the most popular kitchen styles to specific design elements, Dulux rounded up the top five trends.

Shaker kitchen cabinets ranked as the number one top kitchen trend, based on Instagram likes. "This design is synonymous with practicality and simplicity, with flat panel sides and square frames, and it's versatile enough to suit any style of home," says Dulux. And no kitchen is totally complete with a functional kitchen island, another popular design feature. From their added counter space and bonus storage to serving as a gathering space for family and friends, kitchen islands have so much to offer.

Another kitchen staple are wooden floors, which were the second most-liked kitchen trend on Instagram. In 2020, Dulux says to expect that wood floors will stray away from traditional light wood and into deeper hues such as mahogany or even grey. Another timeless kitchen décor element that is popular on Instagram are white cabinets. Their versatility, classic appeal, and ability to brighten up an otherwise dark kitchen are just a few of the reasons why white cabinets will always win.

One kitchen trend that was less conventional was the use of houseplants and flowers in the kitchen. Hanging herb gardens, small buds, and tall plants add life to a kitchen, especially a small space or one in an urban environment with less green space outside. "This trend is seeing plants used as more of a focal point than a background accessory, so big, bold and unique plants are the ones to go for," says Dulux.

As for overall kitchen styles that are popular on Instagram, the brand notes that a Grey and White Country-Style Kitchen was the most popular, followed closely by a Sleek Marble Shaker Kitchen, Black and White Modern Kitchen, Minimalist Scandi-Style Kitchen, and Laid-Back Coastal Chic Kitchen. And after the unprecedented year we have all lived through, a casual kitchen decked out in neural, calming hues is exactly what the doctor ordered.
