John Derian's Exclusive New Halloween Collection with Target Will Cast a Spell on You

If you haven't yet decorated your home for Halloween, it's certainly not too late to start. In fact, we'd urge you to wait until October 10—which is when artist and designer John Derian will release his new limited-edition Halloween collection with Threshold, a Target brand. Known for his decoupage and ceramics, Derian dipped into the spookier side of his archive to bring this curated series of pillows, platters, candelabras, furniture, and more to life—or, should we say, to raise it from the dead. "I love Halloween and all of its magic and playfulness," the designer tells MarthaStewart.com. "And I love that the collection is not scary-scary, more funny-scary. I have a large archive of images and this gave me the opportunity to use some of the 'darker' images in my collection."

Creating a Halloween-centric collection, he says, always made sense in the context of his overarching oeuvre and design process. "When I think about my work, imagery collection, and creative process, I imagine 'casting a spell' with my things," he continues. "That vision inspired me throughout this design process. And I love all of the details, from beautiful beading and lovely cottons and linens to fun melamine, printed glassware, and punctured metal lanterns. We were able to use so many different materials, creating a very expansive, tactile collection."

As for Derians' favorite pieces? Naturally, it's hard for him to choose—and since the collection speaks to so many areas of your home, he doesn't have to (and neither do you!). Make like the designer and spread these delightful oddities all over your house, from the kitchen to the dining room. "I will be hanging the lanterns (from $25, target.com) in my garden, entertaining with the glassware (from $10, target.com), serving on the plates (from $10, target.com), putting the cushions on my sofa (from $15, target.com), drying dishes with tea towels ($15, target.com), and of course proudly displaying my new five-foot-tall stuffed skeleton ($60, target.com)," he says.

Most importantly, the collection works across a myriad of design styles, infusing just about any space with spooky sophistication. "There are so many fun, different things that all work well together," he says, adding that "the candy bowl ($15, target.com), tote bags ($10, target.com), and scented candles ($10, target.com)" are the most accessible and "will be an easy, fun fit in any home."
