A "Father of the Bride" Reunion Is Happening This Week
Netflix is hosting the event on September 25.
In the three decades since the premiere of Father of the Bride, fans of the film have enjoyed reliving the romantic-comedy's best moments—others have planned their own nuptials using the film's backyard celebration as a guide. Luckily, we're about to catch up with the Banks family, reports E! News. Netflix announced that it will host a virtual "Banks family reunion" on September 25, in honor of the anniversary of the film's 1995 sequel; plus, the event will benefit a good cause. "25 years later, the Banks family returns for a very special event to benefit World Center Kitchen," the streaming service shared in a video message on Twitter.
Netflix will stream the reunion on its YouTube channel and Facebook page. The creator of the original film's co-writer, Nancy Meyers, actually hinted at the reunion recently, too. "If he thought a wedding was a lot, how would he react to 2020," she captioned an Instagram post on September 10. "Coming soon to the phone in your hand!"
While it hasn't been announced who will join the special this week, several of the cast members from the 1991 film (including Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, George Newbern, Martin Short, B. D. Wong, and Kieran Culkin) could very well make an appearance. There have even been talks in recent years to create a third installment of the classic wedding movie. "[Director] Charles Shyer wrote a script. I know there's a script out there. And there's talk," Newbern previously told Us Weekly. "I don't know how far it got but I'm sure most of the cast would be into it if the script was right. So maybe that's just a question of that happening."
While a new film, if there is one, is likely still in the works, Newbern—who played the groom in the previous two films—said that he has a few ideas as to what his character would be up to these days. "I think Bryan MacKenzie would probably be a grandfather now. They had a kid so he's probably got a grandkid at this point, I think. Or at least close to it," he said. "Or his daughter would be getting married. He's probably invested in a startup in the Silicon Valley because they are on the West Coast. And they probably live up in the Bay area. They got four kids. They need to shoot a third one. We need to do a third one. That would be great."
