14 of the Best Moisturizers with SPF, According to Dermatologists
These hydrating creams and serums work double duty to nourish and protect skin.
Ensuring skin stays moisturized while blocking out the sun's harmful rays might seem like a two-product job, but thanks to moisturizers with SPF, you can wear less product while actually doing more for your skin. "Moisturizers with SPF protection are great multi-functional products [that] ensure skin hydration as well as UV protection," says Dr. Y. Claire Chang, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology in Manhattan. As with all skincare products, efficacy correlates with appropriate use. "Moisturizers with SPF will only work if used adequately and appropriately," she adds. Dr. Chang also recommends that, as with any sunscreen, you're choosing a product that protects you from both forms of sun damage. "[Choose a] moisturizer with SPF that's labeled 'broad-spectrum,' so that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays, is water-resistant, and has an SPF of 30 or higher."
Not unlike regular sunscreen, Dr. Chang says moisturizers with SPF should be applied generously, to cover all exposed areas of the body, and reapplied frequently. Still, you actually don't need as much product as you might think in order to protect your skin. According to Dr. Chang, "Most adults will need about one ounce of sunscreen to fully cover the body—this is enough to fill a shot glass." You can swap regular SPF with this two-in-one product, but Dr. Chang urges those wanting to condense their routine to make sure they're reapplying every two hours and using the appropriate amount.
Figuring out when to include a double-duty product in your skincare routine might seem difficult, but Dr. Caroline Robinson, dermatologist and founder of Tone Dermatology, says there is a correct time to apply. "The most effective way to apply sunscreen and ensure you are protected is as the last step in your skincare," she says. Ahead, discover dermatologist-recommended products that both hydrate and protect from the sun.
