15 Incredible Throwback Photos of Celebrity Couples
Kim and Kanye were friends long before they dated.
When it comes to our favorite celebrity couples, adorable photo-ops existed long before their wedding days. Here, see our favorite #TBT photos of engaged or married celebs at the start of their relationships, when they were just friends, or when their paths randomly crossed long before dating (and when they were all just babies!).
Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden
Back in 2004, the actress and Good Charlotte guitarist played on opposing teams at the NSYNC Challenge For The Children Celebrity Basketball Game at Office Depot Center in Sunrise, Florida (where Cameron was there to support her then boyfriend, Justin Timberlake). After reconnecting 10 years later in 2014, the pair kicked off 2015 with an intimate backyard wedding in January after a short engagement.
Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher
When the actors were cast in That '70s Show in 1998, Ashton was 20 years old and Mila was just 14. It was around the same time this photo was taken that she revealed that Ashton was her first kiss. "I was like, 'Oh, he's so cute, it's the Calvin Klein model!'" Mila told People
in 2001. "Then I was like, 'I have to kiss him?' I was so nervous and uncomfortable. I had the biggest crush on him." The couple, who married in 2015 and welcomed baby girl Wyatt in 2014, wouldn't officially start dating until 2012.
Beyoncé and Jay Z
When Jay Z appeared in the music video for Bey's first post-Destiny's Child solo project "'03 Bonnie and Clyde" in October 2002, the rumor mill started buzzing that they were dating. The pair appeared together on MTV's TRL on November 21, 2002 wearing matching denim outfits, but remained mum about their relationship status. And though they collaborated many times, referenced each other in their music, and were spotted out together on several occasions, Beyoncé and Jay didn't make their official debut as a couple until the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards. Even then, they both remained tight-lipped about their private life. The superstar couple eventually married in 2008 at their Tribeca penthouse in New York City and had their first child Blue Ivy in 2012.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
Long before they became Kimye in 2012, Kim and Kanye were just friends. "We worked on a project together [in 2004] and there was definitely a spark, but we were in other relationships," Kim told Access Hollywood
. Here is one of their first photos together at the grand opening of an Intermix store on September 25, 2007 in Los Angeles. They would, of course, go on to marry in an over-the-top affair in Italy in 2014 and have two children, North West and most recently, Saint West.
David Beckham and Victoria Beckham
In this 1999 shot (the year the soccer and pop star married), Posh and Beck pose in matching leather ensembles and ultra-trendy (then) 'dos. The couple met in 1997 after one of David's soccer matches and would go on to get engaged a year later. In an interview with W Magazine
, David recalled spotting Victoria on TV and telling friends "That girl there, that's the girl I’m going to marry." When he heard that two Spice Girls were in attendance at his game, he immediately thought, "Please let it be Posh." He jumped on the opportunity by asking for her number, and the rest is history.
Elton John and David Furnish
This sweet photo shows a young John and Furnish back in 1996, just three years into their 23-year relationship. The star performer and his filmmaker hubby entered a civil partnership in 2005, officially tying the knot nine years later after England legalized gay marriage.
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill
Country lovebirds Tim McGraw and Faith Hill have been married for two decades this year. Here, the pair poses for a kiss with a bundle of 1999 ACM awards in tow, celebrating successful music and marriage—both of which they still boast today. Needless to say, their careers are what brought the stars together: McGraw even proposed in the dressing room before one of their shared performances back in 1996.
John Travolta and Kelly Preston
Actor John Travolta and actress Kelly Preston have been kickin' it as a married couple since 1991, which is around the time this darling snapshot was taken—check out that killer perm! In the 25 years since, they've welcomed three children (sons Jett and Benjamin and daughter Ella).
Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar
Talk about a throwback! This 2000 Teen Choice Awards shot showcases Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar rocking some cool shades alongside then-boyfriend (and now-husband), actor Freddie Prinze Jr. The two met on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1997 but didn't start dating until three years later.
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen
About a year into their relationship (which began in 2007 and became an engagement in 2011 and a marriage in 2013), John Legend and Chrissy Teigen were captured getting cozy at the singer's 29th birthday party. The star would later go on to write his heartwarming hit love ballad "All of Me" for the model.
Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker
One of Hollywood's longest-lasting couples, Ferris Bueller (actor Matthew Broderick) and Carrie Bradshaw (actress Sarah Jessica Parker) have been married since 1997 after meeting (through Parker's brother, says People
) back in 1991. In this 1993 photo, the happily married pair gaze into each other's eyes.
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith
Actor, rapper, and funnyman Will Smith began dating actress Jada Koren Pinkett in 1995, which is when they were photographed in this smile-worthy snapshot. No wonder Will is so happy—Jada is absolutely on fire in that totally-'90s look.
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson
We cannot get over how young Hanks looks in this oldie from 1987, where he was caught holding hands with a bubbly and gorgeous Rita Wilson a year before their wedding. The smiles on their faces make it easy to see why they've lasted for nearly three decades.
Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum
Who could've guessed that the young, smiling kids in this flashback from 2006 would marry each other just three years later? Step Up costars Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum began dating shortly after filming, having clearly danced into each other's hearts on set.
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth were basically babies when they met on the set of The Last Song in 2010 (seriously, Hemsworth was 20 and Cyrus was 17). Case in point: This adorable throwback, which Hemsworth shared on Instagram. The actor is shirtless in the blurry photo, and Cyrus still has her long brown locks from her Hannah Montana days. "Throwing it WAY back…," he captioned the shot. "What a 'blur.' #TBT."
