Kate Middleton Just Paid Homage to Her Engagement Anniversary—and Wedding Day—with a Special Dress
The gown included a meaningful nod to her marriage to Prince William.
Nine years after news of her royal engagement was made public, Kate Middleton stepped out for a date night with Prince William in a dress that paid homage to the occasion and celebrated their relationship. The gown didn't, however, nod to the blue ensemble she wore during the announcement in 2010. Instead, the Duchess of Cambridge donned a floor-length black dress with intricate lace patterns—which she wore for a visit to the annual Royal Variety Performance at the Palladium Theatre in London—by Alexander McQueen, the same fashion house responsible for her royal wedding dress.
Fans of the Duchess will recall that she wore a long-sleeved garment with an ivory bodice and satin skirt, designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, when she tied the knot to Prince William in 2011. Much like her wedding dress, Middleton's gown featured ample lace detailing. People notes that the appliqué on the skirt and bodice of the dress was handmade by the Royal School of Needlework, based at Hampton Court Palace.
The dressmakers used the Carrickmacross lace-making technique to add hand-crafted lace flowers, including roses, thistles, daffodils, and shamrocks onto ivory silk tulle. The royal accessorized her look with dangling Erdem earrings, which she previously wore when she officially opened the new Photography Centre at the V&A last October, a black velvet clutch, and a voluminous blowout.
Another highlight of the royal couple's date night? A rare public display of affection. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge notoriously do not touch in front of the cameras—but Prince William was spotted lovingly placing a hand on his wife's back while at the event.
