This Is Why Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner Got Married in Las Vegas Last Night
The surprise elopement was the (legal) precursor to their upcoming destination wedding in France.
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner are officially married! The couple tied the knot on Wednesday evening in a surprise Las Vegas ceremony after Jonas performed at the Billboard Music Awards. According to People, the famous DJ Diplo captured the ceremony, which included an Elvis impersonator officiating the service at Chapel L'Amour, on his Instagram live feed. A source close to Jonas and Turner confirmed to the site that the wedding was legitimate (plus, thanks to public online records, we know that the newlyweds applied for a marriage license earlier in the day in Clark County, Nevada). One of Turner's representatives later officially confirmed the news.
Diplo wasn't the only big-name star who attended the elopement. Other performers from the Billboard Music Awards were present, including DJ Khalid. Nick and Kevin Jonas were seen posing as groomsmen at the altar in matching gray suits while country singers Dan + Shay performed their hit song "Speechless" acoustically as Turner walked down the aisle.
Turner's big-day ensemble consisted of a low-cut white silk top and matching pants, as well as a veil. She was also spotted holding a blue bouquet that featured flashing lights. The couple incorporated some traditional elements, like a vow exchange. The publication reports they both said, "I promise you, I will never leave you. I will love and trust you, all the days of my life." They continued, "In sickness and in health…forever and ever."
To finish off their big day, the pair exchanged ring pops as wedding bands before the Elvis impersonator pronounced them as husband and wife. Before exiting the venue completely, Jonas and Turner posed in front of the drive-thru chapel's famous pink Cadillac while wearing Elvis glasses.
Now that the couple is married, what does this mean for the summer destination wedding they've planned and publically acknowledged? A second source confirmed to People that Jonas and Turner are still on track to wed in France. In fact, the couple strategically eloped because of their upcoming official wedding. According to French law, if at least one party hasn't lived in the region for at least 40 days before the ceremony, the wedding isn't legal-which means that couples taking a trip to marry in France technically have to be married in their home countries beforehand.
