Wedding Vow Ideas Inspired by Songs
At a loss for what to say during your ceremony? Turn to your favorite tune for inspiration.
Maybe you and your spouse-to-be are music buffs. Or perhaps you're struggling to find the right words for your wedding vows. Whether you only borrow a line or recite the full chorus and trade off verses, using the lyrics of a love song is a romantic and unique idea for your vows. Plus, there's the added bonus that every time you hear it after the big day, you'll be reminded of the words you've exchanged.
If you do ultimately decide to incorporate a poignant lyric into your vows, you'll want to choose a song that's played a special role in your love story, advised Lauren Fremont, the wedding planner behind Loli Events. Fremont recalled a couple who did just that, stating that the lyrics ultimately added an emotional, personal touch to their union. "The groom proposed after setting up a flash mob in Central Park to Michael Bublé's 'Everything,'" she explained. "Months later, at the beginning of their ceremony, we replayed the flash mob video, using the song as the processional. The couple then used a few of the lyrics in their vows."
Here, a list of moving love songs-and their most heart-tugging lines-to inspire your own wedding promises.
"'Cause I Love You" by Johnny Cash
"I'll be there beside you if you need a cryin' shoulder. Yes, and I'll be there to listen when you need to talk to me. When you wake up in the darkness, I will put my arms around you and hold you till the mornin' sun comes shinin' through the trees. I'll be right beside you no matter where you travel. I'll be there to cheer you till the sun comes shinin' through. If we're ever parted, I will keep the tie that binds us, and I'll never let it break, 'cause I love you."
"By Your Side" by Sade
"When you're cold, I'll be there, hold you tight to me. When you're on the outside baby and you can't get in, I will show you, you're so much better than you know. When you're lost and you're alone and you can't get back again, I will find you darling, and I will bring you home. And if you want to cry, I am here to dry your eyes, and in no time, you'll be fine."
"At Last" by Etta James
"At last, my love has come along. My lonely days are over, and life is like a song … I found a dream that I can speak to, a dream that I could call my own … And here we are in heaven, for you are mine at last."
"Forever" by The Beach Boys
"If every word I said could make you laugh, I'd talk forever. I ask the sky just what we had, it shone forever. If the song I sing to you could fill your heart with joy, I'd sing forever. I've been so happy loving you."
"You're the Inspiration" by Chicago
"You know our love was meant to be, the kind of love that lasts forever. And I want you here with me, from tonight until the end of time. You should know, everywhere I go, you're always on my mind, in my heart, in my soul."
"When I'm Sixty Four" by The Beatles
"When I get older, losing my hair, many years from now, will you still be sending me a valentine, birthday greetings, bottle of wine? If I'd been out till quarter to three, would you lock the door? Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm sixty-four? You'll be older too, and if you say the word, I could stay with you. I could be handy, mending a fuse when your lights have gone. You can knit a sweater by the fireside, Sunday mornings go for a ride. Doing the garden, digging the weeds. Who could ask for more? … Give me your answer, fill in a form. Mine for evermore."
"You Make Loving Fun" by Fleetwood Mac
"Sweet wonderful you, you make me happy with the things you do. Oh, can it be so, this feeling follows me wherever I go. I never did believe in miracles, but I've a feeling it's time to try. I never did believe in the ways of magic, but I'm beginning to wonder why … You, you make loving fun, and I don't have to tell you you're the only one. You make loving fun."
"All of Me" by John Legend
"You're my downfall, you're my muse. My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues … Cause all of me loves all of you. Love your curves and all your edges, all your perfect imperfections. Give your all to me. I'll give my all to you. You're my end and my beginning. Even when I lose I'm winning. Cause I give you all of me and you give me all of you."
"Lovin' You" by Minnie Riperton
"No one else can make me feel the colors that you bring. Stay with me while we grow old, and we will live each day in springtime. Cause lovin' you has made my life so beautiful, and every day my life is filled with lovin' you."
"One and Only" by Adele
"I dare you to let me be your one and only. I promise I'm worthy to hold in your arms. So come on and give me the chance to prove I am the one who can walk that mile until the end starts."
"Make You Feel My Love" by Bob Dylan
"I could make you happy, make your dreams come true. Nothing that I wouldn't do. Go to the ends of the Earth for you, to make you feel my love."
"The Way You Make Me Feel" by Michael Jackson
"I never felt so in love before. Just promise baby, you'll love me forevermore. I swear I'm keepin' you satisfied, 'cause you're the one for me. The way you make me feel, you really turn me on. You knock me off my feet. My lonely days are gone."
"Such Great Heights" by The Postal Service
"I am thinking it's a sign that the freckles in our eyes are mirror images, and when we kiss they're perfectly aligned. And I have to speculate that God himself did make us into corresponding shapes like puzzle pieces from the clay."
"A New Life" by Jim James
"Babe, let's get one thing clear: There's much more stardust when you're near. I think I'm really being sincere. I want a new life, a new life with you … Can't you see a perfect picture: You and me. But you know, it won't come easy. And what's more, it's worth looking for. Babe, open the door, and start your new life once more.
"I Believe in a Thing Called Love" by The Darkness
"Can't explain all the feelings that you're making me feel. My heart's in overdrive and you're behind the steering wheel … I wanna kiss you every minute, every hour, every day. You got me in a spin but everythin' is A.OK! … I believe in a thing called love. Just listen to the rhythm of my heart. There's a chance we could make it now. We'll be rocking 'til the sun goes down."
"I Want to Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles
"Oh please, say to me you'll let me be your man. And please, say to me you'll let me hold your hand … Yeah, you've got that something, I think you'll understand when I'll say that something: I wanna hold your hand."
"Night and Day" by Billie Holiday
"Night and day you are the one. Only you beneath the moon and sun. Whether near me or far, it's no matter, darling, where you are. I think of you night and day, day and night."
"Mirrors" by Justin Timberlake
"I couldn't get any bigger with anyone else beside of me. And now it's clear as this promise that we're making, two reflections into one. 'Cause it's like you're my mirror, my mirror staring back at me. Yesterday is history, tomorrow's a mystery. I can see you looking back at me. Keep your eyes on me … You are the love of my life."
"And I Love Her" by The Beatles
"I give her all my love, that's all I do. And if you saw my love, you'd love her too … A love like ours could never die. As long as I have you near me. Bright are the stars that shine, dark is the sky. I know this love of mine will never die, and I love her."
