Designer to Watch: Why You Need to Know About Sabrina Dahan
After working for Monique Lhuillier's design team for years, Sabrina Dahan is branching out on her own and debuting her first collection of wedding dresses at Fall 2016 Bridal Fashion Week.
Dahan, a California native and a bride-to-be herself, will introduce five wedding dresses inspired by the romantic trips she took to Paris with her now-fiancé. "Paris is such a special place for me. I spent summers with my family there, and it's also where I met my husband, so I can't help but always be inspired by the most romantic city in the world," the designer exclusively tells Martha Stewart Weddings.
The City of Love will also appear in other parts of the collection, from "whimsically patterned floral and vine appliqués" which mimic the vines that creep up the walls all over the Parisian streets, to the "iron lattice of the Eiffel Tower incorporated into fine cross-hatch details on a flowing ball gown."
These embroideries, Dahan hopes, will contribute something unique and special to the love story of each bride who wears one of her wedding dresses-similar to how "seeing the sparkle of the Eiffel Tower" influenced her own love story with her groom-to-be.
While Dahan's own wedding gown won't be revealed until she walks down the aisle next summer, her design process for her bridal look has influenced her collection. "I'm going after special, heirloom styles and couture fabrications," she notes.
And though Dahan may sound like a new kid on the block, she's been working towards her own line for years. "I knew at a young age that being a designer was what I wanted to do. I have been working in the retail and wholesale realm since I was 15 years old-so I definitely know the ropes," she says. Dahan also said training with one of the bridal greats, Monique Lhuillier, was one her "most cherished work experience yet."
In addition to the design lessons she learned from Lhuillier, Dahan has also picked up a few other tricks of the trade when it comes to surviving her first bridal fashion week: Next to "caffeine and a lot of hard work," the designer says her show-day ritual will certainly end with a glass of Champagne to celebrate.
