A Southern Soiree With Pretty Yellow Details in Charleston

After meeting at the wedding of friends in San Diego, Carolina Davila and Kevin Jewett soon discovered their mutual love of sailing. That ignited a spark between the two, who danced all night at that wedding. A year-and-a-half later on March 16, 2013, they tied the knot themselves in Charleston, South Carolina, where they live. The Southern soiree was filled with details special to the couple and their guests, starting with a newspaper chock-full of information about the destination and the weekend's events.

Southern Style

For their South Carolina wedding, the bride wore Jenny Packham's "Aspen" gown in ivory, Badgley Mischka shoes, a BHLDN headpiece, her great grandmother's diamond bracelet from Argentina, and her aunt's earrings from Colombia. The groom chose a classic Hickey Freeman suit.

Designed by the Bride

Carolina designed the invites and all paperie, working with a letterpress company to produce the final suite. "It was such a cool experience to see the first run of the invitations on the old Heidelberg press," the bride explained.

Yellow Dresses

The bridal party looked golden in a mix of yellow dresses.

Dapper Dudes

The groomsmen and ring bearer sported gray suits and yellow seersucker ties.

Puppy Love

Luna, the bride's beloved pup, was on hand to celebrate, wearing a yellow leash of course. A total of four flower girls walked down the aisle, all wearing seersucker with buttery sashes.

The Ceremony

The service took place in the intimate and historic Saint Luke's Chapel. A dear friend's father presided and another pal (and local songstress) Laura Ball performed.

A Trolley Ride

Trolleys transported the bridal party from the church to the reception in true Charleston style.

The Reception

The reception was held at the Carolina Yacht Club, down in the city's Battery area. The venue was the perfect spot for two sailors to celebrate their marriage. Round tables filled the room, where the 140 guests dined on local fare. Late-night snacks followed, including BLT sandwiches (a favorite of the groom's family and a staple of their summers together at his grandmother's cottage).

Crafty Escort Cards

Escort cards fashioned to resemble vintage price tags were paired with corks sporting table numbers. The design honored a brief visit to Napa, during which the couple had an amazing time in one of the bride's favorite spots—California wine country. The cards sat on a bed of coffee beans, another appropriate décor choice since the bride's family has long been involved in the coffee-roasting and production industry.

Lemon Yellow Décor

Kevin once told Carolina a story about the moon and how she was his moon. As he spoke, Carolina kept thinking that he was her sun and the light in her day. She now associates the color yellow with that notion, and also loves its cheerful appeal. It is no surprise then that they incorporated the hue in several ways throughout the event, including lemon-filled arrangements flanking a fireplace.

The Centerpieces

Carolina has a green thumb, so the centerpiece arrangements featured plants like moss and succulents. Terrariums were surrounded by birds (the couple flew a lot to see each other during their courtship), the pair's initials, and runners of burlap.

Symbolic Favors

Small muslin bags stamped with the couple's logo and wedding date were filled with poppy seeds. "The yellow poppy symbolizes wealth and prosperity, but to us it means more than that," Carolina said. "When I was young, I spent many summers in France and would go for walks with my mom who always pointed out the beautiful poppies that seemed to grow wild among the fields of wheat. They were scattered, rare, and seemingly 'one in a million.' Kevin is my one in a million and I am his." A small watercolor of the blooms, painted by Carolina's mom, was the finishing touch.

The First Dance

"That's You" by Gregory Page—a singer-songwriter with a 1920s feel—played as the couple danced for the first time as newlyweds. The duo, who danced for six hours straight the night they met, couldn't wait to hit the dancefloor.

Late-Night Sparkle

The bride changed into a JS Collections sequined shift for the late-night festivities—including a bike ride with her husband, which reminded the couple of the day Kevin took Carolina on a casual bike ride through town that ended at a jewelry store. There he asked Carolina first if she could help him pick something out, followed by, "Will you spend the rest of your life with me?"
