Walk Down the Aisle to Your Own Beat! 3 Musical It Girls Turn a Love of Tunes into a Big-Day Look
The mix of music that has influenced your life can influence your bridal style, as well.
Whether you're opera-obsessed or crazy about country, the music you choose as the soundtrack to your life—and your wedding—can be a major fashion influence. Every one of these dresses, worn throughout New York City by three musical movers and shakers—NYC DJ Mia Moretti, Danish indie-pop impresario Oh Land, and soul-pop songstress Judith Hill—is in tune with a specific style. And each lets you go from solo artist to best new duo in perfect harmony.
Getting ready on your wedding day isn't too different from the way a Broadway actress preps backstage for the opening night of a musical. Here, Oh Land, who counts Ginger Rogers as her childhood hero, wears a Swarovski-encrusted dress with a tulle skirt that calls for twirling, dipping, and dancing cheek to cheek.

From the majestic interior of Carnegie Hall, Judith Hill, who appeared in the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, portrays a trained virtuoso. (The role isn't much of a stretch—a pianist, she's composed music for orchestras.) You'll conduct your own symphony of oohs and ahhs when you wed in a gown adorned with more than 100 hand-sewn crystals.

Nashville-bound or not, you'll be channeling a young Dolly Parton in this sweet tea-length lace-sleeved number. "'Jolene' is one of my all-time favorite songs," says Mia Moretti, shown here at Electric Lady Studios, which Jimi Hendrix opened in 1970 and where hits by David Bowie, U2, and Nashville's very own The Civil Wars were recorded.

So what if you sound like a no-last-name-needed icon à la Aretha, Diana, or Whitney only in the shower? This gold-beaded sheath will make you look like one—and feel as if you just won a grammy (or, in Aretha's case, 18). Icon-in-training Hill took the gleaming beauty for a spin on the stage at Joe's Pub, which has hosted some of the most electric voices around, including that other one-name wonder, Adele.

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, of course—but arriving in this operatic ombré duchesse-satin ball gown couldn't hurt! Standing in the same space where soprano Maria Callas belted Bellini in 1959, Moretti hits a sartorial high note.

With smooth voices and silky gowns, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald commanded audiences' attention in smoky clubs. Here, Hill plays a modern-day chanteuse, wearing a 1920s-inspired beaded dress that glows in the dim light of The McKittrick Hotel's Manderley Bar. Think how dazzling the slinky scene-stealer would be as you sashay down the aisle or sway to a riff or two on the dance floor.

We can totally see Joni Mitchell slipping into this wispy chiffon sheath topped by a beaded-lace bib overlay. That's not to say that northern California–bred, Fleetwood Mac superfan Moretti doesn't do it serious justice. Or that you wouldn't, either—with or without a baby's breath crown on head and a jangling tambourine in hand.

. Melissa Joy Manning earrings, $800;

Whether you plan to walk down a sandy Caribbean aisle or you just want your day to have a sun-soaked feel, give these breezy chiffon tiers a whirl. At the Jamaican diner Miss Lily's, the in-house radio station blasts reggae tunes that transform supper into a full-blown rager. After a visit, Hill asked, "How cool would it be to have a wedding like that?"

"Independent music stands for so many things," says Oh Land, whose album Wish Bone is a shining example of the genre. "But it mostly means that you don't follow the rules." Wear this printed silk gown covered in shimmering thread work for your ceremony and you can consider the white-dress-on-your-wedding-day edict distinctly un-followed. (Extra points for a Manic Panic hair hue.)

Although Moretti is best known for providing thumping beats for fashion fetes, what she wears gets just as much attention as what she spins. Shown here on Culture Club's light-up dance floor, the DJ says her favorite thing to play at weddings is "anything by Michael Jackson." As for this long-sleeve point d'esprit dress? The skirt is detachable for better boogying, and the overall look is definitely a thriller.

From merengue to tango, bossa nova to reggaeton, Latin music is such a crowd-pleaser that it's tough to choose a top variety. But Hill gave it a shot, saying, "I love salsa because the rhythm and voices are so raw." She cited Celia Cruz as her artist of choice but had a harder time picking what she liked best about this gown: the lacy, plunging neckline, fitted waist, or dance-ready taffeta skirt.

A strapless sweetheart minidress is a lot like a catchy Top 40 radio hit—you just can't deny its cheeky magnetism. California native Hill is no stranger to an irresistible pop tune. She's sung backup for Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and Elton John. This fall, she'll step into the spotlight when she releases her debut album.

Getting married can make you feel like a rock star. Think about it: You have a glam crew at the ready, flashing cameras following you, and a legion of fans cheering along the way. And should you, like Oh Land, want to jump into your adoring crowd while wearing web lace and a cloud of asymmetrically cut tulle, we say "rock on!"
