When you start planning your wedding, you'll quickly realize that there are near endless opportunities for personalization, and while the creation of some items will be best left to the professionals, there are areas where you can feel free to let your creativity flow. Customizing your wedding invitations is one such example. Because these paper goods are so important and can require a great deal of time to create, you may want to leave the actual printing to a pro. Still, you can get creative with the design or add extra enhancements after they've been printed. And if you're feeling extra ambitious, we can help you create your invitations from scratch at home.

From modern minimalist to detailed works of art, your invitations serve as a sneak peek of what's to come. If you plan to make your own wedding invitations, it's important to keep in mind that these pieces of stationery will set the tone for your whole celebration; you'll also want to be sure you've accounted for all the necessary wedding invitations pieces, including all of the enclosures, into account before deciding on a final design. In order to help you figure out just what you need for your suite—as well as how to personalize it—we're sharing some of our favorite ideas you can craft on your own.

Of course, not every aspect of your invites needs to be hand-made for you to consider it a DIY element. You can add bespoke details to make your invitations even more personal. One simple way to add a custom element to your invitations is by painting them. These white invites and envelopes from Minted got an instant upgrade with just two strokes of craft paint. For sheer coverage that lets the text remain visible, choose a light shade and wet the brush first. No matter what you choose, your wedding invitations will wow with these DIY ideas.

Make a Backer

Why spend so much time focusing on the front of your invitations only to neglect the back? Adorn the backside with card stock or fabric in a coordinating color or pattern. Use spray adhesive to attach the two and then use an X-acto or rotary cutter to cut to size.

Stamp It

Stamps in any size can be used to create invitations. Just keep in mind that the larger the stamp, the greater the difficulty in making each imprint clear. A special T-square (available at specialty crafts stores) helps align the stamp on the card. Press firmly, and avoid rocking the stamp back and forth. Before working on the final version, practice on scrap paper.

Dipped

If you can dunk a doughnut into some coffee, you can do this: Print or order invitations on thick white paper and dip them into liquid dye or food coloring to add a subtle pop of color. We used Rit liquid dye ($4.99, michaels.com) and good old-fashioned food coloring to elevate these printed-paper goods. Mix and match dye colors if you want something more creative!

Get the Tropical Envelope Liners How-To

Here's a little secret: making your own envelope liners is easy! Just trace the curve of your envelopes onto any paper, cut it out, and trim 1/2 inch off the bottom. It works for any paper and any envelope. Try our tropical envelope liners, or make monogram or patterned liners.

Edge Paint

Don't neglect the edges of your invites! They're the perfect place to add bold color since it's in such a small dose. Clamp your entire stack of invitations together with spring clamps. Paint the sides of invitations with acrylic paint and let dry before unclamping.

Wraparound Labels

Get the Wraparound Labels How-To

One sure way to address for success? Create sleek, wrap-around labels. If calligraphy is too expensive or your penmanship isn't perfect, this is a handsome option that's easy to do. Using our template, type return addresses on the left side of document and addresses on right and then print. Run the page through a sticker machine. Then, with a bone folder, crease where indicated; cut out using a utility knife and ruler. Trim the short edges with pinking shears. Finally, adhere the labels to envelopes, positioning the folds so the return addresses are on the back.
