Beverly Johnson's groundbreaking career as a supermodel has pushed the fashion world forward, so when she met her now-fiancé, Brian Maillian, she knew that they were the perfect match. "As I was breaking boundaries in the fashion industry, he was doing the same on Wall Street," she told People. The supermodel and the financier recently announced their engagement; Beverly is thrilled to have found her partner in life—plus, she says, they have so much in common. "We know the same songs and we've lived through a lot of the same things," she said.

Beverly also noted that, while the couple's journey towards marriage has been a long time coming, the proposal itself was actually completely unexpected. "My older sister Sheilah was there and she said to Brian, 'I didn't hear you give my sister an answer when she asked you to marry her,'" she recalled. "And he said, 'I have answered her. I have asked her to marry me. And she said, No. Besides that—I don't have a ring.'"

Beverly went on to share how Brian popped the question—and another family member actually helped bring the moment to life, too. "Brian's 88-year-old mother took off her wedding ring and passed it down the table till it got to Brian and he got down on one knee. I was sobbing uncontrollably and he said 'Will you marry me?' and I said yes!"

While the supermodel's soon-to-be mother-in-law let her keep the ring until the end of the day, Brian later took Beverly to a jewelry store to show her the ring he had picked out. But she insisted that they not take the traditional route for their engagement. "I said 'Brian, I don't know how to say this, but I don't want a diamond ring, let's buy a house instead,'" she shared. As they continue to march to the beat of their own drum, Beverly noted that they are simply enjoying this moment together: "Just finding the love of my life at this point in my life has been amazing."
