11 Celebrities Who Got Married at Home Like It was NBD
Celebrity brides and grooms who tied the knot in intimate, low-key ceremonies in their homes and backyards.
For anybody, getting married at home can be cozy, personal, and fun. For famous couples, at-home weddings offer the added benefit of privacy and normalcy. Plus, if you happen to own a pretty piece of property, why not turn it into a one-of-a-kind wedding venue? Here, we spotlight celebrity brides and grooms who tied the knot in intimate ceremonies and partied in private, laid-back fashion on their own estates.
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi
If you couldn't guess from their fabulous senses of humor, DeGeneres and De Rossi are two laid-back celebrities. But their August 16, 2008, wedding at home in Beverly Hills, California, was nothing short of elegant, with a gorgeous white tablescape under a white tent and both women wearing Zac Posen.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
This power couple had been partners for more than nine years and welcomed six children before they officially tied the knot—at Château Miraval, their 1,000-acre estate in Provence, France. The Jolie-Pitt children were heavily involved in the intimate event, even helping pen their parents' vows. Maddox and Pax (who also baked the wedding cake!) walked Jolie down the aisle, Shiloh and Knox served as ring bearers, and Zahara and Vivienne tossed petals. Jolie's Versace dress and veil were even decorated with drawings by the kids.
Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux
Not even Aniston and Theroux's guests knew they were attending a wedding when they showed up at their house for what they thought was a birthday party on August 5, 2015. After all, the invitations were sent via email. (Email! How much more low-key can you get?) Sure enough, though, upon arrival, they were asked to hand in their phones before the backyard ceremony officiated by Jimmy Kimmel.
Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden
On January 5th, 2015, a pre-Golden Globes party at Diaz and Madden's place turned out to be their at-home wedding! The Jewish ceremony took place on a stage in the backyard of Diaz's Beverly Hills home, and the tented reception included surprise live performances by Ryan Adams and Lionel Richie. Standing up with Diaz were her BFF Drew Barrymore, her sister Chimene Cain, and her new sister-in-law Nicole Richie.
Julia Roberts and Daniel Moder
Leave it to the Runaway Bride star to surprise everyone with a secret engagement and wedding disguised as a Fourth of July party at her ranch in Taos, New Mexico, in 2002. It wasn't until midnight that Moder dropped down to one knee and proposed to Roberts under a silk arch. "In front of everyone we love, I want to know, will you marry me?" Moder reportedly asked, to which Roberts replied, "Yes, yes, yes!" before the two wed right then and there.
Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth
Witherspoon's ranch estate in Ojai, California provided the perfect setting for her private wedding to the entertainment agent on March 26, 2011. The rolling hills kept the event concealed, and the property's "timeless California architecture, rustic materials, and beautiful gardens," inspired the wedding details, a source told People
Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy
On November 27, 2015, the child star-turned-fashion designer married her French banker beau in a small, laid-back ceremony at their Manhattan home. After exchanging vows inside, the couple celebrated with cocktails in the back garden, then went back inside for dinner. And as Page Six famously reported, the event was said to have "bowls and bowls filled with cigarettes, and everyone smoked the whole night."
Camila Alves and Matthew McConaughey
Before they officially married, the Oscar-winning actor and Brazilian-American model shared two children and had "been living a married life for over six years." So it makes sense that they'd host their June 2012 wedding at their home in Austin, Texas. The couple even provided air-conditioned tents so that guests could stay on-site for the three-day celebration complete with entertainment and Brazilian and Southern cuisine.
Amber Heard and Johnny Depp
Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross
The singer and actor's fairy-tale fête took place at mother-of-the-groom Diana Ross's estate in Greenwich, Connecticut on August 31, 2014. And it certainly was a homey, family-filled affair! Jessica Simpson served as MOH, and Ross's half-sister Ellis was a bridesmaid. Simpson's five-year-old son, Bronx, walked her down the aisle, and her niece, Maxwell, played flower girl. In addition to her hosting duties, Diana Ross officiated and sang, and family friends Donald Faison and CaCee Cobb also stood up with the bridal party.
Julianne Moore and Bart Freundlich
When you've been together for years and you share two children, a low-key wedding at home is all you really need. Such was the case when the Oscar-winning actress married the film director in the backyard of their Greenwich Village home, before just 36 guests, on August 23, 2003. Moore, pictured here with their daughter, Liv, wore a simple mauve-colored Prada sheath.
