Designers Share the Bridesmaid Dress Trends You'll See at Every Wedding in 2018
Dress your girls in one of these trending styles.
Ready or not, wedding season will be here before you know it! As we look ahead to a new year of nuptials, we couldn't help but wonder what trends we should expect to see in bridal party fashion. According to the experts, brides are picking more fashion-forward looks for their bridesmaids. We turned to a few bridesmaid fashion experts to give us an idea of what bridesmaids will be wearing throughout 2018!
Gone are the days of only the bride wearing a lace gown on the big day. According to Rebecca Lau Marsh of White Runway, her girls will walk down the aisle in the delicate fabric, too. "Textured lace will be a huge trend in 2018 for brides and their bridesmaids," she explains. "3D lace has a romantic, ethereal, and dreamy appearance. You'll find lace epitomizes femininity in all colors, but particularly when in blush and ivory." Lindsey Bennett of Azazie agrees, adding, "We're talking full lace gowns that have a more casual feel but still appropriate for weddings!"
If you attended a number of weddings last year, you probably saw at least one bridal party donning white dresses. Expect to see that trend stick around this year, too. Designer Joanna August says that "minimal" will be the word of the season, making ivory frocks all the more appropriate. "All white everything for the bride and her best gals," August says. "Super crisp and clean with a side of pure romance." Marsh excepts the trend to last beyond just this season. "This is not ending any time soon," she explains. "Ivory bridesmaid dresses give a clean, cohesive, and dramatic look to weddings. Pair them with bright bouquets and décor for a luxe look."
Caped wedding dresses ruled the latest bridal runways, and now that trend is spilling over into the world of bridesmaids. "Caped dresses are completely chic and will add just the right amount of drama to your bridal party look," says Marsh. "They're also super flattering."
Although this trend will certainly be most popular during the cooler months, expect to see it all year long. "There usually isn't a bridesmaid dress trend that suits a winter wedding, but sleeves are the way to go in 2018," explains Marsh. And there are tons of ways to make long sleeves look interesting. "Whether it's off shoulder sleeves, sheer lace sleeves, flared sleeves, or bubble sleeves, you cannot go wrong!" August loves long sleeves for 'maids, too. "Think lots of volume and drapey bell sleeves," she adds.
August also cites figure-hugging dresses as having a major moment. "The bride will shine from the front, but her 'maids will take the cake with their tasteful yet flirty back," she says. Bennett adds that legs with slits will be hugely popular this year. "Time to show off those legs!" she says.
Go for something a little more glamorous by way of a beaded or jeweled gown. "These embellished details are making their way into bridesmaid dresses this year," Bennett says. "We're seeing lots of beaded details on straps and belts to add a touch of glam."
Say goodbye to that sweetheart neckline. Bennett says 2018 will be the year of the high neckline.
