The Best Wrinkle-Free Fabrics to Consider for Your Wedding Dress and Bridesmaids' Gowns
Because no one can carry a steamer all day long.
The last thing you want to worry about on your wedding day is whether or not your beautiful gown (or your bridesmaids' dresses!) is going to get wrinkled before the festivities start. To ease that worry, one of the best things you can do it choose a wrinkle-resistant fabric. Which textiles fit the bill? We spoke with Kirsten Johnson, marketing director and stylist at Emma and Grace Bridal Studio, to get her input on which fabrics are most likely to remain wrinkle-free from your pre-ceremony photos until the end of the after-party.
If you need to travel with your wedding dress, it's especially important to choose a fabric that doesn't wrinkle easily, and crepe is one of the best options. "Fabric and wrinkles go hand in hand, but one of the best fabrics to work with is crepe," says Johnson. It doesn't wrinkle easily, but if it does, you won't notice them quite so much because crepe naturally has a somewhat crinkled surface.
"Lace is another great option to choose if you're worried about wrinkles," says Johnson. Since lace wedding dresses always have some form of underlayer, the dimension means that any wrinkles will blend in with the rest of the fabric. What's more, due to the intricacies of lace, it's tougher to spot wrinkles on these patterns in general. Remember that lace isn't just reserved for the bride. A colorful lace gown would be perfect for your bridesmaids, too.
While some may not like the roughness of traditional sturdy tulle, silk tulle is a soft, beautiful iteration that's just as unlikely to wrinkle. The lightweight material is known for keeping its shape but also touches up beautifully with just a little bit of steam, so in the event that wrinkles do happen, you'll be able to get rid of them quickly. For a more decorative look, consider embroidered tulle instead, which reads as a bit more formal.
