Prince William and Kate Middleton's First Encounter Was Hilariously Awkward, Says a Royal Memoirist
The couple met at the University of St. Andrews back in 2001.
The early stages of Prince William and Kate Middleton's relationship have been well-documented over the years. We all know that the pair met as students at the University of St. Andrews in 2001, but one minor detail about their initial greeting has recently been revealed, Marie Claire reports. According to Tom Quinn, a royal memoirist who took part in the British documentary William & Kate: Too Good To Be True?, the Duke of Cambridge actually tripped when he approached Kate for the first time. "One of the funny stories is he was so desperate to meet her that as he walked towards her, he apparently tripped and said, 'Oh that's a terrible start, you're going to think I'm a complete clot,'" Tom noted.
The moment might not have unfolded as smoothly as Prince William would have liked, but he quickly redeemed himself—as Kate recently recalled, he impressed her with his cooking skills when they started dating. During the BBC television special A Berry Royal Christmas back in December, Kate shared that Prince William still knows his way around the kitchen, People reported. "He's very good at breakfast. In our university days he used to cook all sorts of meals," she said.
Kate joked that he used cooking as a way into her heart. "I think that's when he was trying to impress me," she said. When asked what his specialty was, she candidly shared: "Things like Bolognese sauce and things like that."
The married couple of nine years mentioned that taking their time during these early years was critical; ultimately, the slow approach built the foundation for the relationship they have now. "We were both very young. It was at university, we were sort of both finding ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff, it was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up," Prince William noted during their engagement interview, touching briefly on their short-lived separation at that time. "It was just sort of a bit of space and a bit of things like that, and it worked out for the better."
