Airbnb has made it easier than ever to explore new destinations, so it should come as little surprise that couples are turning to the popular home sharing site for their weddings. Whether you're interested in hosting your nuptials at a gated Malibu estate, a villa in Italy, or a farm retreat in Taos, there's no denying that there are some wedding-worthy options on Airbnb. But before you book the property of your dreams and send out the wedding invites, there are a few things you need to consider.
Confirm the property is suitable for a wedding.
Not all properties are amenable to hosting events and even fewer are prepared to do so, which is why full transparency is key. "Make sure that the host allows events and knows that you will be hosting a wedding," advises Lindsey Nickel, wedding planner and owner of Lovely Day Events. If an Airbnb property is available for weddings, it will state as much in the description and sometimes even in its title.
Read the fine print.
Like all things wedding-related, you'll want to spend some time reading the fine print before booking your Airbnb. A property's max capacity, both for events and sleeping arrangements, is important to note, and there may be extra fees associated with having an event at the venue. Each Airbnb also has its own rules, and those that do allow events will have guidelines regarding wedding-day setup, minimum number of days, and more. Make sure these requirements fit with your needs.
Consider rental options.
While there are some venues that operate solely as event and group rentals (and may even have a commercial kitchen for cooking or catering needs), they may not offer all of the traditional rentals you'd be able to get from a full-service wedding venue. "Find out which essentials the venue does and does not provide," Nickel says. "You will likely need to rent items such as tables, chairs, linens, and lighting."
Think about the number of projects you want to take on.
When you book an Airbnb as your wedding venue, you'll like need to take on more projects yourselves, and you may need to enlist the help of your bridal party and family members to help with things like wedding set-up and break down. It's a lot of hands-on work and, without the help of a wedding planner or coordinator, it can be more effort than the bride or groom are interested in handling.
