Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Chose an Iconic '80s Song for Their First Dance
As far as royal celebrations go, the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex's second wedding reception was incredibly upbeat. From hilarious speeches and unlimited food stations to the celebrity guest list and packed dance floor, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Frogmore House fête is being hailed as one of the most extraordinary events ever thrown by the monarchy.
Their first dance song perfectly matched the vibe of the evening. Harry and Meghan took their first married spin to Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody," reports The Telegraph. It was an unconventional choice (it has a fast tempo!), but was very special to the bride. According to People, Meghan once said that it is "her happy song" in an interview.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's time on the dance floor wasn't the only lively aspect of the evening-the reception's speeches were another highlight. In a break with tradition, both the groom and the bride offered words of gratitude to their guests and families. Prince Charles followed suit, telling his son, "My darling old Harry, I'm so happy for you," before officially welcoming his daughter-in-law to the family.
When the mic was passed to Prince William, the best man, and Charlie van Straubenzeerry (the groom's best friend), things got comedic. "William managed to strike just the right balance between hilarious and solemn. He did mention their late mother, Princess Diana, and said how proud she would have been of her younger son," a guest told The Sun, adding that William also called Meghan "the sister he never had." "But when he and Charlie got going, it was hilarious. They teased Harry about his growing bald patch and Will said it would become as bad as his. It was some bash."
Hilarity was clearly the theme of the evening. Comedian James Corden acted as the party's unofficial host and reportedly organized a dance-off that featured Prince Charles, Prince William, and the groom. Even Meghan and her mother, Doria Ragland, joined in, another insider told The Sun. "Everyone was laughing because it's something no one expected." Also completely unexpected? The celebrity involvement. Idris Alba took a turn as D.J (he played soul classics, 1960s R&B, and 1980s pop jams!), Serena Williams "played beer pong like it was tennis," and George Clooney treated both the bride and Kate Middleton to a waltz.
Plenty of those celebrities, particularly those close to the bride and groom, spoke out to congratulate the couple. "Every once in a while there is a moment when time stands still. That happened today," Quantico actress Priyanka Chopra wrote on Instagram. "You my friend were the epitome of grace, love, and beauty. Every choice made at this wedding by you both will go down in history, not just because it was your wedding but because this incredible wedding stood for change and hope. Both things that the world needs desperately." Stylist Jessica Mulroney, who served as Meghan's unofficial maid of honor, wrote on social media that she was both a "proud friend" and a "proud mom"-her twin boys were the page boys responsible for carrying the bride's veil down the aisle on the big day.
As for the rest of the reception's details? The couple hired Clare Smyth, Britain's top chef and the first woman to hold three Michelin stars, to serve up festival-themed food, complete with burger stalls, a pork belly station, and a whiskey bar. Attendees also sipped on a signature rum and ginger cocktail-a play on Harry's red hair-titled "When Harry Met Meghan" and Pol Roger Champagne. The newlyweds sent their guests home with goodie bags and slippers, a much-needed luxury after an evening of dancing.
