Lilly and Sean’s Enchanted-Forest Wedding on a Rooftop in NYC
Lilly’s knowledge of all things chic (she’s a fashion stylist) paid off the day she wore a striking-blue dress for her aunt and uncle’s Passover celebration. After laying eyes on the gown (and the beauty wearing it), Sean, an insurance manager, approached Lilly to tell her she was wearing his favorite color. “To this day, I tell my friends he had me at turquoise,” she says.
Both Boston residents and fans of the forest, Lilly and Sean often went on dates in the great outdoors. Fittingly, Sean popped the question at the location where they spent their first hiking date; they then got to work planning an open-air ceremony. Two years later, on September 6, 2014, the now San Francisco residents brought their passion for the wilderness to the Big Apple, tying the knot on an overgrown rooftop garden overlooking Manhattan. Just more than 100 loved ones enjoyed a night of woodland accents and fairy-tale magic.
When their original plans to wed in the woods fell through, the couple booked 620 Loft and Garden, located on the roof deck of Rockefeller Center with views of Fifth Avenue.
What a View
Across the street, St. Patrick’s Cathedral brought gothic mystique to the botanical locale.
Calligrapher Deborah Delaney created the simple but elegant stationery suite.
A Veiled Vision
The bride completed her look with a custom-made lace overlay and fresh floral head wreath.
A Brimming Bouquet
Lewis Miller Design created a vibrant arrangement of roses, dahlias, scabiosa, and other assorted greenery, tying it off with silver satin ribbon.
Sean hired jeweler and friend Camilla Dietz to design Lilly’s cushion-cut diamond ring, complete with an emerald border and Celtic inscription.
A Wedding in Wonderland
Before the ceremony, Lilly and Sean posed for pictures atop an Alice in Wonderland sculpture in Central Park.
The Bridal Party
All bridesmaids wore J.Crew dresses in peacock, a color reminiscent of the turquoise shade Lilly wore the night she met Sean.
To Light the Night
Each maid held a lantern adorned with ferns, moss, and astrantia providing a bit of fantastical flair.
A Special Moment
Lilly and her parents paused to take a photo with the skyline as the backdrop.
The bride and groom signed the Jewish marriage certificate surrounded by family members and close friends.
Four spiraling tree trunks supported a canopy of roses, dahlias, and woodland-esque flora, which the couple stood beneath for the Jewish ceremony.
“We loved that we could transform the space into a forest wonderland and showcase our love of the outdoors,” explains the bride of the terrace setup.
Lilly and Sean recited original vows beneath twinkling city lights.
Original Hors D’oeuvres
For hors d’oeuvres, Pinch Food Design served artful appetizers like these mini sugared doughnut holes.
Birch trees surrounding the dining area embodied the couple’s love for nature.
Arrangements of dahlias, scabiosa, astrantia, snowberries, paniculata hydrangea, mossy dianthus, and western white clematis, along with glass mushrooms and candleholders, decorated the tables. Sea-green napkins, a printed menu, and silver plates marked each seat.
Ombré calligraphy by Deborah Delaney listed dinner options of strip steak, pan-seared Dover sole, and heirloom tomato panzanella.
Guests all raised a glass to toast the newlyweds.
The Wedding Cake
A White Cake’s vanilla and chocolate mousse cake was decorated with garden-themed embellishments.
A New York Delicacy
The magical night ended with a sweet surprise: “We had Cronuts delivered, which guests truly savored,” says the bride.
