This Couple Honored Their Favorite Musicians in the Coolest Way at Their Coastal Santa Barbara Affair

Becca and Joey met in a class at Stanford during their freshman year of college—soon enough, the pair became fast friends. Two years later, they both ended up on the same study abroad trip to Spain, where their friendship transitioned into something more romantic. "Sparks flew over a pitcher of sangria in Barcelona," Becca says of the early days of their courtship.

Seven years into their relationship, in April of 2018, Joey surprised Becca with an elaborate proposal. He decorated their apartment with photos and handwritten notes that outlined the timeline of their relationship together; flower petals, strewn on the floor, led to the balcony, where Joey was waiting with an engagement ring and Champagne.

Becca went to high school in the Carpinteria, California, area in Santa Barbara County, so the couple knew they wanted to look for venues there. Klentner Ranch offered breathtaking views and served as a convenient location—it's the midway point between the Los Angeles area, where Joey is from, and San Francisco, where the newlyweds live now. The duo teamed up with Tory Smith of Smith + James to pull off a coastal chic-themed wedding with a natural color palette of green, gray, white, and tan.

They invited 188 guests to watch them tie the knot on a hillside and dine al fresco on October 19, 2019. Although Becca admits it was difficult to reign in her Pinterest ideas at first, she says, she knew the celebration had to be a reflection of their life together. "The most important thing to us was to make our wedding unique, but true to us as a couple, which required us to ignore the many distractions and opinions along the way," says the bride.

Becca went to Wildbride, a boutique in Hayes Valley, with her sister and stepmom to find her dream wedding dress. She tried on a number of different of ensembles before finding a V-neck sheath style with pearl button details by Laure de Sagazan. "It made me feel beautiful and confident. Timeless, while also feeling on-brand to the venue and wedding we wanted to have—vintage-inspired with a modern feel," she says. "It was also incredibly comfortable!"

A Stylish Group

Joey wore a light suit from Bonobos paired with a white Hugo Boss button-down shirt, burgundy tie, and pocket square. Brown leather shoes from Mezlan were the final touch. He also carried his late grandfather's lapel pins in his pocket throughout the celebration.

Becca wanted her bridesmaids to don unique dresses. "I've always loved DÔEN, a Santa Barbara- and Los Angeles-based brand that's inspired by vintage designs and the California of past decades," Becca says. She chose a black paisley print and asked her three attendants to choose their preferred style within the pattern.

The goal for the groomsmen's looks? Complement the bridesmaids' ensembles—so they considered asking them to wear green, burgundy, or brown suits to speak to the print. "After some serious mood boarding, we ultimately landed on a sand suit from Bonobos with burgundy ties that looked great next to the black DÔEN dresses and greens of Klentner," the bride says.

"We chose to have adult friends as our flower girl and ring bearer—two of our best friends from college," Becca says. The "flower girl" (who was, in fact, a man) wore a lush crown all night, and the ring bearer held a sequined pillow with his name on it. "The crowd of guests erupted in laughter as they walked down the long stairway and aisle at Klentner," the bride says.

"After this special moment it felt like it was our day from here on out."

The couple's mutual friend, Nick, officiated the ceremony, and incorporated anecdotes from interviews with their friends and family to make the ceremony extra special. Becca and Joey exchanged deeply personal vows chronicling their relationship's journey and shared passion for music, sports, and their favorite show, MTV's The Challenge. "There were tears and laughs in the crowd, and many friends remarked afterward how our personal ceremony and vows made them feel like part of our story," Becca says.

Guests cheered the couple on and created a tunnel that led to the dance floor as the newlyweds made their grand entrance—and went right into their performance. They created a choreographed number to "Always Alright" by Alabama Shakes. "This song has enough of a tempo that allowed us to get down, so we choreographed a fun dance with the help of The Dance Loft in San Francisco that featured everything from spins to dips to freestyle," the bride says.
