Prince William Doesn't Wear a Wedding Ring for This Surprising Reason
Duchess Kate, however, does.
If you examine a photo of Prince William and Duchess Kate closely, you'll likely notice something interesting: the former doesn't wear a wedding ring, while the latter does. Like many wives, Kate's band sits on her finger with her engagement ring. But unlike many husbands, William's ring finger is bare. What gives? Vogue just ran a story investigating why, and uncovered some surprising information.
Back in 2011, before the couple wed, a source openly announced that William wouldn't be wearing a ring. "It was something the couple discussed, but Prince William isn't one for jewelry," a royal aide told Daily Mail. "It really is just down to personal preference," the insider added. "He just doesn't like jewelry," Penny Junor, an author and royal expert, reiterated to Vogue.
That being said, like many of the couple's actions, there's also a royal precedent. According to another Daily Mail source, it's "common for men in that strata of society not to wear a traditional wedding band. If they do, they tend to wear it with their family signet ring, but William doesn't have one of those." Prince Philip, for example, doesn't wear a ring, while Queen Elizabeth II does. Prince Charles put on wedding rings for both of his marriages, on his pinky, beside his signet ring.
Both Vogue and Daily Mail note that especially in the United Kingdom, wedding rings for men didn't take off until World War II, when soldiers wanted symbols of their marriage. Keep in mind, however, that women have been donning wedding bands since as early as ancient Egypt. Is there a double standard? Or are William and Kate modeling that marriage decisions belong to the couple, and the couple alone? We'll let you decide.
