Gabriela and Tyson's Laid-Back Martha's Vineyard Wedding

Save-the-Dates

With their DIY approach, Gabriela and Tyson designed the invites themselves and letterpressed them with sunny yellow ink on vintage machines at The Arm Letterpress. The wording was in both English and Portuguese, since the bride is Brazilian. A photo sticker of the couple sealed the kraft paper envelopes.

The Stationery Suite

The multipiece suite included maps, agendas, area recommendations, and postcards with Gabriela's photos. The invitation itself also featured an illustration of the island of Martha's Vineyard, a motif seen throughout the wedding weekend.

The Fashions

Gabriela wore a tea-length dress, her grandmother's necklace, her mother's earrings, and her custom engagement ring from Bario Neal that was made using a diamond from Tyson's grandmother and sustainable and environmentally conscious methods. Tyson donned a Paul Smith suit, Jil Sander tie, and his grandfather's vintage Patek Philippe watch.

The Footwear

Tyson kept things casual with a pair of Converse Jack Purcell classic sneakers, and his bride added color courtesy of these red Walter Steiger heels.

The Bridal Bouquet

Florist Krishana Collins, whom Gabriela has known for years, did the flowers for the event, including the bride's bouquet of poppies, chamomile, astilbe, ranunculus, tweedia, scabiosa, wild stock, mint, and nigella.

Pretty Posies

In lieu of a formal bridal party, Gabriela's sister, Paloma, and brother, Niko, and Tyson's dear friends Kate and Dave, were asked to partake in supporting roles. The ladies carried bouquets composed of chamomile, ranunculus, and poppies.

The Boutonnieres

The guys sported boutonnieres of lavender, wax flower, blueberries, and rosemary.

A Walk on the Beach

After formal family photos on the bluff of the property, the couple ventured down to the oceanfront for a few portraits alone.

The Ceremony

Gabriela and Tyson were married before 150 loved ones in an outdoor service not far from the water. Clusters of herbs hung on the chairs along the aisle, which the bride walked halfway down with both parents. There, her groom came to meet her and escort her the final few steps. The mutual friend who brought them together made their union official, and reflected on the start of the bride and groom's relationship and how she'd watch it grow over the years.

The pair had asked Gabriela's Brazilian grandmother to write a letter to them, as she was unable to attend. Gabriela's youngest Brazilian cousin read it in Portuguese, followed by an English translation. Vows were exchanged, and to personalize them, Tyson recited a few lines in Gabriela's native tongue (he'd taken lessons in the weeks preceding), and she excerpted some of her journal entries from the early days of their romance.

Happily Married

Good friends performed an acoustic rendition of José González's "Heartbeats" during the processional, but the song was more upbeat during the walk back up, thanks to The Knife's original version of it. "We both agree that that moment, our first seconds of married life, energized with the music and all of our friends cheering in front of us, was certainly a highlight of the whole weekend," Gabriela says.

A Selfie Snapshot

Just a few seconds after walking up the aisle as newlyweds, Gabriela and Tyson paused to take a selfie and celebrate. Still, at Tyson's insistence, the phones were put away right after this so that the twosome could be fully present at their celebration.

Hold the Drone

Good friend Nate Bolt flew in from California for the celebration, and brought his drone with him.

A View From Above

Escort Cards

A combination of Martha's Vineyard images and snapshots from Gabriela's and Tyson's Instagram feeds were printed via Print Studio and used as escort cards.

Cocktail Hour

Local oysters, clams, and mussels were on offer from a raw bar during cocktail hour, which took place on the same lawn as the ceremony. An assortment of crostinis, mini lobster rolls made with Brazilian pão de queijo instead of a traditional bun, tuna crudo, and salgadinhos were also served. There was also a cheese table, and plenty of crudités and dips.

Summery Sippers

No cocktail hour would be complete without cocktails, and the pair went for a signature sipper playing on their initials—a gin and tonic, with rosemary and cucumber added to the recipe.

The First Dance

Van Morrison's "Crazy Love" played as the two danced together for the first time as husband and wife.

The Dinner

Guests feasted on rice with scallops, coriander seeds, and cilantro, which was paired with greens with lentils and beets. The meal, all prepared by friend and local chef Chris Fischer, was served in the tent on long wooden farm tables dressed with burlap runners cut by the couple and tied off with twine. Jars filled with rocks from the island held table numbers in place, and simple floral arrangements rounded out the décor.

Dinner at Dusk

After dinner, dessert was served, including a grasshopper pie made by friend Olivia Pattison, pies from Eileen Blake Pies, and brigadeiros, which are a chocolaty Brazilian wedding treat. An added bonus? Each guest went home with a box of Chilmark Chocolates.

The wedding coincided with the summer solstice, so the sun didn't set until around 9 p.m., with the party lasting one more hour after that.

Fun at Night

Sparklers brought in by a friend from New Hampshire were enjoyed after dark.
