Exclusive: Spanx Founder Sara Blakely Introduces a New Line of Bridal Shapewear (and It's Super Pretty)
Pretty and functional? We'll take two of each.
The undergarments you choose on your wedding day are just as important as your wedding dress. After all, they ensure that your beautiful gown looks just as good on you as it did on the runway model. Finding the right foundation pieces for your specific silhouette can be hard, but Sara Blakey, founder and inventor of Spanx, just made it a little easier for you. "When I invented Spanx 16 years ago, the most important thing to me was creating a product that would make millions of women feel good in their clothes. And it does!" she says. "Women, especially brides and bridesmaids, have been asking for a product that they could wear on their special day that was pretty and powerful."
Blakely and her team answered your calls with a new collection of undergarments that are as beautiful as they are functional. Made of lightweight, no-show shaping lace, these pieces will make you look and feel fabulous. Best of all, the Spotlight on Lace Collection, which consists of four new styles, including a bodysuit, bralette, brief, and high-waisted brief, ranging in price from $38 to $74, launches March 25, just in time for wedding season. Here, Blakely shares everything brides and bridesmaids need to know about her new designs, wedding day lingerie, and more.
How did you know what brides and bridesmaids needed on the wedding day?
"After being a bridesmaid 13 times, then a bride, and hopefully a mother-of-the-bride someday, I knew first-hand that we want to look and feel our best on our special day," Blakely says. "Finding the perfect lingerie that does more to make you look beautiful and feel supported and confident was almost impossible."
Why should brides and bridesmaids invest in shaping lingerie?
"The lace styles in this collection were constructed using a single-layer mesh that's graduated to target the tummy and offers the softest, lighted shaping possible," she says. In short? They're perfect for special occasions and everyday use.
Which pieces from your new collection should every bride have?
"Each piece was made specifically for a bride's needs with targeted smoothing," says Blakely. Their brief, which starts at $38, was created to work with every silhouette, so brides wearing strapless, sheaths, and A-lines can all experience the magic of Spanx. And to avoid having your strapless dress slink down throughout the night, Blakely suggests trying their Pillow Cup Signature Strapless Bra. "It was designed for the sole purpose of comfort and versatility," she says. "It gives you a nice lift and stays put. Bring your bra with you to the fitting and have your dress tailored around the bra, removing any gaps for the perfect fit."
How do you make sure guests can't see your shapewear underneath the wedding dress?
"Spanx are so specifically designed, fitted, and tested on real women, over and over again, to ensure fit and comfort," says Blakely. "It is flexible and stretches for a custom fit, with the softest fabrics and targeted smoothing that lays flat for no visible panty lines."
Are bustiers and lingerie only for the honeymoon?
"No way!" Blakely says. Her belief is that women should feel sexy and confident every day, not just for special occasions. "This new collection, as well as ongoing Spanx collections, are designed to support all women and make her feel good every day."
