Kapari Natural Resort, Santorini, Greece

kapari-natural-greece-mwd1011mmsmith.jpg

Romance is built into the very stone of this bright, white wedding cake of a hotel perched on the edge of the island's sky-high cliffs. The views are sublime from inside the tranquil whitewashed rooms, and even better from the heated pool and terrace lined with chaise longues. An on-site restaurant (also serving up amazing vistas) champions succulent seafood and simple local staples.
Room to book: Sleep off dinner in Room 102, which you'll love for its lofted bed and the luscious light that streams in through duck-egg-blue shutters.

Le Sereno, St. Bart's

le-sereno-st-barths-mwd1011mmsmith.jpg

This handsome resort delivers Riviera glam in a colorful Caribbean setting: Dangerously good-looking French barmen dispense drinks, the interiors are as chic as a Parisian pied-a-terre, and Le Restaurant des Pecheurs concocts the perfect bouillabaisse. Of course, the island comes through, too, in the soaring palm trees, coral-reef cove with turtles and tropical fish, and infinity pool that's one belly flop away from the ocean.
Room to book: When it comes to bedding down, catch your zzz's in a Suite Terrase, which has oodles of space plus a neat little garden.

Coworth Park, Berkshire, United Kingdom

coworthpark-uk-mwd1011mmsmith.jpg

This manor-house hotel brings 21st-century cool to its 17th-century trappings. It's got everything you'd expect a stately English home to have: 240 acres of lovingly tended grounds, polo fields, a riding center, and an opulent dining room overseen by a Michelin-tickling chef. But the spectacular, eco-friendly spa is a surprise addition, as are the in-room Nespresso machines and Bang and Olufsen flat-screen TVs. And there's no chintz in sight: Interiors are warm and autumnal (russet, honey, burnt orange), a theme supported by leaf-motif four-posters and arboreal artwork.
Room to book: You'll be swept away by the grand garden views from the Derby Suite (room 34), a regally decorated love nest located smack in the center of the main house.

Amangiri, Lake Powell, Utah

amangiri-utah-mwd1011mmsmith.jpg

Sandstone sculpted by wind and water over millions of years inspired the neutral tones and natural materials of this luxury hideaway on Navajo land. Its 34 suites and spa blend seamlessly with the mesas, canyons, and desert that surround them, and the pool wraps around a giant protrusion of rock. A lot of work went into creating such sophisticated, modernist simplicity -- Congress even had to pass an act to allow construction. It's a splurge, but you'll save on airfare!
Room to book: If you're a sucker for sunsets, opt for a Mesa View Suite. Or, play it like a rock star for a week and book the Girijaala Suite with a pool big enough to swim laps in and a private roof deck dubbed the "sky lounge."

The Lake House, Daylesford, Australia

lake-house-australia-mwd1011mmsmith.jpg

Fantastic dining, the mother of all wine cellars, and stunning mist-caressed scenery? If you like your epicurean indulgence in an idyllic countryside setting, make a beeline for this quaint retreat overlooking Lake Daylesford. Originally just a restaurant, the white-timbered hotel and its state-of-the-art spa (complete with treetop hot tubs) are a labor of love for superchef Alla Wolf-Tasker, whose local-produce-driven menus have been attracting gourmets from nearby Melbourne for 25 years.
Room to book: The Waterfront Rooms in the main house have balconies overlooking the lake, but for size and sumptuousness, splurge on the Spa Villa for its courtyard with a sunken hot tub and fire pit.

Casa dell'Arte Residence, Bodrum Peninsula, Turkey

casa-dell-arte-turkey-mwd1011mmsmith.jpg

As the name suggests, art is the glorious muse here. The owner of this boutique villa on the country's glitziest coastline has amassed an eye-wateringly valuable private collection, with pieces constantly shuttled back and forth between two galleries and the hotel. (A Seaview Suite alone boasts works worth 3.4 million.) It's not all about the paintings and sculptures, though: There's a slender infinity pool, perfect for cooling off after hot Mediterranean days, a dainty restaurant that prepares satisfying local fare, and a fleet of classic cars ready to be relished by vintage-loving twosomes.
Room to book: Catch a flick in the hotel's cinema, be kneaded into nirvana in the spa, then curl up in a Dome Suite and admire the constellations the lights make on the ceiling.

Forty 1 Degrees North, Newport, Rhode Island

41north-newport-mwd1011mmsmith.jpg

With its megayacht-dotted marina and subtle nautical theme, this New England charmer radiates refinement. It's all unassuming glamour: sleek button-back leather, artful combos of matte and shine, and the LEED stamp of eco-approval to boot. Smart in-room touches such as iPads and Malin and Goetz bath products tell you that the staff are a thoughtful bunch, and the two waterside restaurants (the upscale Grill and casual Christie's) let you know the chefs are pretty savvy, too.
Room to book: Go for light, bright Suite 3, which feels like an airy apartment complete with a separate dining area. The marble gas fireplaces in the sitting room and bedroom offer welcome warmth on breezy evenings.

Baros, Maldives

baros-maldives-mwd1011mmsmith.jpg

One for castaway romantics and desert-island fantasists, this resort possesses a postcard-perfect backdrop for an amorous tryst -- with your new hubby, that is. The 75 stylishly modern villas are scattered across sugar-white shores, surrounded by tropical foliage or perched above the water, so you're only ever a few seconds -- at most -- from sand or sea. Four restaurants keep your palate perky, and if Robinson Crusoe had access to a spa like this, he'd never have bothered coming home.
Room to book: With an on-call butler and private pool, the Baros Residence is the headline act, with top billing to match. Spring for a Water Villa instead, where you can step straight into the lagoon from your deck.

Villa Magna, Madrid, Spain

villa-magna-spain-mwd1011mmsmith.jpg

Lovers of unabashed glamour will be dazzled by this aristocratic Spanish senorita, which counts Cartier, Hermes, and Gucci stores as its neighbors. The hotel has always been exclusive: it's surrounded by palaces, and was originally built to provide the upper crust with mind-bogglingly beautiful apartments in the 1970s, when penthouse living was all the rage. One glimpse at the menus of the two restaurants -- one Spanish and the other Cantonese, surprisingly -- will have weight watchers tearing up their diet plans and diving into plates of shellfish risotto and scallop salad.
Room to book: All bedrooms are bold and beautiful, but those in the Prestige category take the cake for their elegant sitting areas.

Paradise Road The Villa Bentota, Bentota, Sri Lanka

paradise-road-srilanka-mwd1011mmsmith.jpg

On a secluded stretch of beach sequestered behind spidery palms, a once-faded mansion now bursts with boutique pride. Welcome to Paradise, where romance is toasted with fiery tamarind-chili martinis. The hotel lives up to its name, spreading happiness via local dishes, a refreshing pool, and a riot of color and fragrance in two acres of gorgeous gardens. Accommodations are ravishing, too.
Room to book: Tucked away by the garden, Superior Suites 3 and 4 have the broadest beach-facing balconies on the first and second floors.
