Princess Eugenie Revealed the Inspiration Behind Both of Her Wedding Dresses
The royal went for two very different looks—here's why.
Like most royal brides, Princess Eugenie wore not one, but two wedding dresses-both of which are about to go on display at Windsor Castle. The two gowns-she wore the first, an off-the-shoulder Peter Pilotto number, to her ceremony and the second, a chic Champagne-hued dress by Zac Posen, to her evening ceremony-are currently part of an exhibit at the former bride's wedding venue, which opens on March 1. As part of the exhibition's audio component, Eugenie explained the inspiration behind both of her garments, reports Town and Country.
The royal cites her sculosis scar as the key to her ceremony gown's design. According to the royal, she wanted something with a low back to showcase the scar, the result of a spinal operation she underwent at age 12. "I had always wanted a low back, part of it was showing my scar. I believe scars tell a story about your past and your future and it's a way of getting rid of a taboo," she said of the garment, which was co-created by both Pilotto and Christopher de Vos.
The story behind her reception dress, a custom silk gown designed by Zac Posen (who she describes as "such a cool, fun, brilliant designer and friend"), was all about Grace Kelly-level glamour. "I wanted something reminiscent of Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief so I showed that for reference and Zac came up with this silk that he'd found from Manchester. Every single draping effect, every single detail, every button, it's all painstakingly done by him and his team," she said.
The exhibit-now located in Windsor Castle's Grand Reception Room-also features the royal's wedding accessories, including the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara, which she borrowed from her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. "I've never worn a tiara before in my life. It was the most incredible thing to wear such a piece of history that my grandmother had lent me, it was a very proud moment," said Eugenie.
