#HeSaidYes! Dustin Lance Black and Tom Daley Are Engaged
How do an Olympic diver and an Academy Award-winning screenwriter announce their engagement? First with a formal announcement in The Times, then in an adorable Instagram photo, of course!
Following a short blurb in The Times, the athlete and TV personality, who came out in a YouTube video at the age of 19, and filmmaker, who won an Oscar for Milk (about America's first "out" politician, Harvey Milk) took to Instagram on Friday to post a picture that spilled their secret-till-now news: They're engaged! The black-and-white photo depicts the pair's matching bands with single center stones, styled elegantly on the newspaper clip. "Thank you so much for all of the kind words and well wishes. Dream come true. #IsaidYES then #HeSaidYes," wrote Black, with his fiancé reiterating appreciation for everyone's "lovely messages" in his own caption. Based on the time stamp of the posts, it seems the couple coordinated to click "Share" at the exact same time. Now that's what we call "true love" in the digital age!
In a December 2013 appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, Daley opened up about the day he fell in love. Since then, it's been widely suspected that he was speaking about Black: "He makes me feel safe, happy, and to be honest, right now I couldn't be happier … it happened so quickly. I thought I'd really liked someone before, but I'd never felt the feeling of love ... I was completely overwhelmed by it, to the point where I can't get him out of my head all the time. I've never had it before where I love someone and they love me just as much as I love them."
The happy couple has been together for more than two years and still seems very much in love. Last week, Black shared a photo on his Instagram of a romantic picnic he and Daley shared, calling it the "perfect Sunday in the park" and possibly hinting at the news to come. And in June, Daley told Buzzfeed he saw marriage-and children (3!)-in his future.
Though the couple hasn't yet released a date, The Telegraph reported Daley's mother as saying that it will likely be post-2016 Olympics. "When Tom told me I could just feel the excitement in his voice," Daley's mother told The Telegraph. "Just hearing him feel that excitement made me feel excited."
