Exclusive: Idris and Sabrina Elba Share Never-Before-Seen Photos of Their Wedding Cake
The newlyweds asked a family member to bring their big-day dessert to life.
Idris Elba has a next-level sweet tooth, Sabrina Dhowre (now Elba!), tells Martha Stewart Weddings. She does, too—which is why their wedding cake was one of their big-day priorities. The couple, who tied the knot in Morocco four months ago, trusted only one person to bring their confection to life: the actor's cousin-in-law, Szilvia Elba, who just so happens to be an award-winning pastry chef. "We wanted to keep this in the family," explains Sabrina. "We were so happy when she said she could do it."
Though Szilvia took the reins, she was open to the couple's input—a good thing, too, since the bride had a clear vision. "I wanted the cake to have a naked, half-iced look to it (which always looked chicer to me than fondant)," she explains. "I love roses, as well, and thought placing the flowers in between the tiers matched the theme of the reception." The duo also noted their flavor choices—Idris chose a classic vanilla cake with a cherry filling and buttercream icing, while Sabrina opted for an olive oil cake with lemon and basil buttercream ("I had it in an Italian restaurant once and fell in love with the flavors!" she adds)—which Szilvia melded with ease.

The baker arrived on location a week before their April 27, 2019, nuptials; she wanted to make sure the final product was flawless. "It was going to take a lot of work, since she was baking in a new country with different ingredients," says the bride, adding that Szilvia also needed to take into account their icing type, considering the arid desert heat. Having Szilvia in the kitchen in the days prior to the event, however, posed one tiny problem for the bride: "I had been on a keto diet on the lead-up to the wedding, but as soon as I knew Szilvia had started baking, I couldn't help stealing some [cake]. I definitely had more of it than anyone else."

Ultimately, the confection checked all of Idris and Sabrina's boxes. Best of all, "it was made with love," she says. The pair cut into Szilvia's creation during their reception; they played Cameo's "Candy" and fed the very first slice to Idris' five-year-old son, Winston ("He was eager to have the first one, and I was happy to cut him a little piece," she says). The bride capitalized on the opportunity to "put some surprise icing" on Idris' face: "But I made sure he fed me first, so he wouldn't see it coming and do the same to me."
