The World's Oldest Couple Just Celebrated Their 80th Wedding Anniversary
The college sweethearts met in 1934.
At 106 and 105, respectively, John and Charlotte Henderson are the world's oldest living married couple. Although their anniversary isn't until December 22nd, the Texas-based couple was honored over the weekend with a celebration to commemorate 80 years of marriage. And thanks to recognition by the Guinness Book of World Records, the couple—whose combined age reaches 211 years—have the title of the oldest living couple in the world, notes Daily Mail.
While the couple's enduring love story is one for the ages, their initial meet-cute is just as heartwarming. It all started in their shared zoology class at the University of Texas at Austin in 1934. "I thought he was just a fine fella, and I didn't mind his looking over my shoulder," Charlotte recounted to the Washington Post of initially spotting her future husband. While the couple was smitten from the start, "it took her five years to make up her mind that she wanted to get married," John noted with a laugh during his interview with the outlet.
As for the wedding itself that preceded their long-standing marriage? In line with the modern-day trend of micro weddings, John and Charlotte were married in a tiny ceremony with only two guests present. Following the nuptials they honeymooned in San Antonio, staying at a hotel that cost $7 a night at the time, the Washington Post notes.
Although their relationship is, literally, one for the record books, it should be noted that the Hendersons are the oldest living couple—but don't boast the title for the longest marriage. The Hendersons have been together for 85 years, and married for 80 of those, but the record for the longest marriage is currently at 86 years. According to the Guinness World Records, Zelmyra and Herbert Fisher were married for 86 years and 290 days before Herbert's death in 2011, the Washington Post reports.
