The May 21, 1945, wedding ceremony that united these screen legends was only three minutes long, but their love story is everlasting.
Bogie and Bacall

The romance between Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall is one straight out of old-time Hollywood. One year before they were married, Bogart and Bacall met during the filming of To Have and Have Not. It was in this movie that Bacall spoke the words: "You don't have to say anything, and you don't have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow." The lines made the world fall in love with her-and Bogart, too.

It seemed like every photographer in the world gathered at Malabar Farm in Lucas, Ohio, to catch a glimpse of the wedding between the stars. In the end, only one was allowed inside to take pictures-and luckily for us, he captured the simple, elegant affair beautifully. Although the images are in black and white, Life magazine's Ed Clark recalls a few colorful details. For example, Bacall wore a pale beige dress and a leather belt and drank martinis as she descended from a staircase to meet her beloved Bogie. After the short and sweet ceremony, Clark then yelled to Bacall, "Feed him a little cake!" And just like that, Life had its most iconic newlywed shot of the pair.

Their love story, although a short one, remains legendary-a story not only of lovers, but of best friends.
