Leave it to Martha to find a helmet that's as stylish as it is functional.

However leisurely the bike ride, a helmet is essential, but most of the options on the market fall short when it comes to style. Most being the keyword: Martha managed to find a helmet that melds fashion and function. On a recent bike ride around her Bedford property, she donned a helmet from Bike Pretty, which looks more like a sun hat than your typical safety staple.

She paired the straw-hat-helmet-hybrid—which features a black bow and sleek chin strap—with a neutral cream outfit for the ride, which she took with Kevin Sharkey on their new Pedego bikes; she posted a few photos from the outing on Instagram. "Finally had a couple hours to ride my new @pedego bikes with @seenbysharkey. We rode all over the farm, through the woods, up the steep hills and down! We had so much fun," she captioned the series of images.

Though the key part of her look, the Straw Hat Bike Helmet ($179 for helmet and cover, bikepretty.com), is currently sold out online, there are several similar stylish options to choose from. And while Martha's fans might have been most excited about her headgear, our founder was particularly excited about her bike, which is partly electric to help riders navigate tougher inclines.

"The electric feature of these amazing bikes enables any rider to negotiate all steepness of terrain. Great for my farm's four miles of carriage roads and for on the roads of Bedford, Mount Desert, and East Hampton," Martha explained. "Although in East Hampton, I do not need assistance on those roads which are really quite flat and a good 10 speed riding bike does the trick. Thanks @pedego for creating bikes any of us can use for speedy and safe travel and exercise." She did, however, conclude with a nod to her accessory: "The cute hat is actually a helmet."
