These Will Be the Most Popular Living Room Paint Colors in 2020

If you're looking for a new hue to brighten up your living room, there's no time like the present. This area of your house is the epicenter of home life—it's where your family spends most of their time together, where you host and entertain guests, and where you likely go to relax and unwind. That's why it's important that your living room is a place you want to be, and that it's a place that sets the right kind of mood.

The two key components needed to achieve this, according to Patrick O'Donnell, Farrow & Ball brand ambassador, is color balance and good lighting. "We have started to see a move away from the cleaner white and pale gray spaces that have been at the forefront of design aesthetics for the last 10 years and are now embracing colors that either soothe or are empathetic to the natural light source coming into the room," he explains. "We are also seeing some great creativity with the paint finish, too, such as hand-sprayed walls in full gloss for an extraordinary lacquer effect." Deep Blue

Farrow and Ball's "Scotch Blue" is a saturated deep blue that O'Donnell says is perfect for that "grown-up" living room look. "Either use this color in our super matte Estate Emulsion where the finish will take on an almost suede-like quality or spray in Full Gloss for added drama," he says. "Accent colors that would work effortlessly on upholstery are burnt orange velvet on the sofa or for something zestier, a good spring shaded green in silk!"

Pale Peach

Sue Kim, Color Marketing Manager for Valspar Paint, predicts that warm shades will be reintroduced into the living room in 2020, providing balance to the existing gray tones in our furniture and accessories. "Valspar 'Pale Powder,' one of our 2020 Colors of the Year, is a warm neutral that has an earthly quality that feels authentic and comforting," she says. Styling it with white or birch furniture will provide a tranquil vibe.

Crimson Red

Lacking natural light? O'Donnell sees Farrow & Ball's "Crimson Red" to be the perfect deep, brown, smoky-toned pink to bring warmth to a light-starved room.

Hushed Blush

Light pink has captivated homeowners over the last couple of years, but a paler and even lighter iteration is becoming popular. "Valspar 'Crushed Out' is a hushed blush that brings a fresh new take on off-white and is another of our 2020 Colors of the Year," says Kim. "Soft and minimalistic, it is a beautiful neutral backdrop, and when accented with green, blues, and reds this warming shade will recede as a beautiful neutral backdrop."

Teal Blue

If you're looking for something a bit eccentric—a hue that will really make your living room pop—O'Donnell suggests a teal shade. "Farrow & Ball's 'Vardo' cleverly balances blue and green so that it never appears too cool," he says. "This color will work as a treat for a modern, clean space and would be a wonderful foil to set off mid-century furniture."

Off-White

You can't go wrong with shades of white—and off-white is one of them. It's nice and soft—a universal neutral for those who don't want color, but are afraid true white will feel too cool, notes O'Donnell. He suggests keeping the room's style simple, with linen sofas and scrubbed wooden floors dressed with a Berber rug and artwork framed in pale oak.
