Making cat treats from scratch might seem like a lot of work, but when it comes to our feline friends, it's really the least we can do to reciprocate the love and care they give us. "One of my favorite treat recipes is made from only three ingredients and can be easily changed to fit your pet's taste preferences or dietary needs," says Ashley Poskin. "Knowing exactly what ingredients go into the mix is especially helpful if your Kitty suffers from a touchy tummy."

Step One

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Purée the can of sardines (with the oils) in a food processor, then add one egg and a 1/2 cup flour. Pulse until well blended. Continue to add flour, one tablespoon at a time, until the mixture begins to pull away from the sides of the food processor and just starts to form a ball. Once the consistency is that of a pie dough, remove from the food processor and place on a floured surface. Note: When using pastry flour, you can end up needing closer to 1 cup, if you choose to use another flour you may end up using more or less. Always start with 1/2 cup, then add more as needed.

Step Two

Roll the dough on a floured surface until it forms a ball, then roll it out with a well-floured rolling pin until it is approximately 1/4 inch thick. You can cut out the treats any way you choose, but we recommend keeping each individual treat 1 by 1 inch or slightly smaller. "I used a mini cookie cutter," Poskin adds, "but you could also make tiny biscuits by rolling small balls and flattening them with the back of a fork."

Step Three

Once you've cut out all the treats, place a piece of parchment paper on a baking sheet and line them up so that they are close, but not touching. Bake treats in the oven at 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes.

Once the treats are beginning to brown, remove from the oven and allow them to cool completely before transferring to an airtight container for storage. If you have any treats left after one week (with Kitty's appetite, we're betting you won't), toss, and make a new batch.
