Easy Chocolate Frosting

This rich, five-ingredient frosting takes about five minutes to make.

When we say this chocolate frosting is easy, we mean it: Five ingredients and five minutes are all you need. There's no need to melt chocolate—in fact, you don't need to turn on the stove or get out your mixer for this recipe. Simply sift confectioners' sugar and cocoa together, then add room temperature butter, milk, and vanilla extract. Mix the frosting until smooth and it's ready to spread on your favorite cupcakes, Martha's Ultimate Chocolate Cake, or just about any dessert that would benefit from a luscious chocolate topping.

This recipe makes 3 cups of frosting, enough to fill and frost an 8-inch two-layer cake.

Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups confectioners' sugar

  • 1 cup Valrhona cocoa powder

  • 12 tablespoons (1 ½ sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature

  • ½ cup milk, room temperature

  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Sift dry ingredients:

    In a small bowl, sift together the confectioners' sugar and cocoa powder.

  2. Add remaining ingredients and stir:

    Add butter, milk, and vanilla; stir until smooth and free of lumps.
