This craft comes from decorating editorial director Kevin Sharkey, and it takes inspiration from the Updated Traditional Room he decorated for the Martha Stewart Living digital magazine for iPad.

Resources: RIBBA frame available from Ikea. "Yes!" all-purpose paste available from Amazon. Martha Stewart Living paint testers available from The Home Depot.

  • Wood frame

  • Frame mat

  • Interior paint

  • Paintbrush

  • Chip brush

  • All-purpose paste

  • Wallpaper or large sheet of decorative paper

  • Utility knife

  • Photograph to fit mat and frame

  1. Paint frame with a room-coordinating color; let dry.

  2. Using a chip brush, cover front of mat with paste. Smooth a piece of wallpaper over mat that is 3 to 4 inches larger than mat on all sides.

  3. Turn mat over. With a utility knife, cut wallpaper inside mat window, corner to corner both ways, creating an "X" within the mat. Fold each triangle of the "X" over the back of the mat and paste in place. Trim tops off triangles to fit width of mat.

  4. Trim corners from excess paper around mat. Fold sides over back of mat and paste in place, overlapping corners neatly.

  5. Insert mat, then picture, into frame; secure with frame's backing board.
