A short valance of lustrous satin pleats adds a touch of elegance to a sitting-room window without hiding the detail of the frame -- and without obscuring sunlight. The valance shown here is easy to make: Choose satin in a color that complements the wall, so the valance blends in with its setting. Cut the fabric to a length longer than the window's width, and hem it on all four sides. Sew pencil-pleating tape, available at sewing stores, to the back of the fabric's top edge, and tug the strings in the tape to form the pleats.
